The top 12 Power conference teams in the NET ranking that do not make the NCAA Tournament automatically make the NIT. If we consider the traditional cutoff, here is where we stand:

1. TCU (47)
2. Baylor (49)
3. Washington (50)
4. USC (52)
5. Virginia Tech (56)
6. Wake Forest (58)
7. Missouri (59)
8. West Virginia (61)
9. Cal (62)
10. Cincy (63)
11. LSU (66)
12. Arizona State (67)

13. Oklahoma (69)
14. Stanford (71)
15. Syracuse (72)
16. Colorado (76)
17. Oklahoma State (77)
18. Northwestern (78)
19. Minnesota (79)
20. Florida State (85)
21. Notre Dame (87)
22. Mississippi State (90)

We have five games plus the SEC Tournament to move up ~25 spots.

I'm not sure that's exactly right. In NIT land, there is a thing called the exempt bid, not to be confused with the auto bid. There will be an exempt bid for one team awarded to each of the 12 highest rated CONFERENCES on KenPom. So the power conferences get one plus leagues like the Mountain West, the A-10, the MVC, the American etc down to whatever the 12th rated conference is. Those teams also get to host in the opening round. The SEC and ACC get TWO exempt teams because The College Basketball Crown was created last year by Fox as a competitor and took more of the Big 12, Big 10 and Big East teams to that abomination of a tournament. If you don't know about the Crown, consider yourself lucky. Auto bids as usual go to league champions who don't win their conference tournament as long as they are above a certain level in the metrics. Then the field is completed with other at large teams.

That's different than just taking the top 12 power conference teams in the NET. All of those teams may qualify or be selected one way or another in the end though.

You are right. Someone explained this on Twitter wrong and I didn't check.

But, same result, we need to be one of the top two SEC teams to not make the tournament, which means we need to move up ~25 spots. Of course LSU declined last year, so that's certainly a possibility.

OR 12 teams need to move down 1-12x spots if we stay steady

12(x1*x12)/n)(i)(t) where x -s Josh Hubbards 3 point percentage, n is constant, i =quad 1 wins/sum of square root of q3 and q4 losses) and t= who gives a damn.

N=17 it

Half those teams ahead of us will decline if they don't make the real tournament. We will probably be able to play in the NIT this year if we want to.

At this point, just try and post a winning record. That would be a good season with this team. Portal bust!

NIT will be an over achievement for this team. Even losing in the first round will be considered a moral victory.

Heck. I don’t even want to finish the regular season. Much less play a meaningless post season tournament.
