The Mountaineers (3-1) return to competition less than 48 hours after their monumental, 2-1 victory over No. 1-ranked Penn State on Sept. 2. The victory was the program’s first-ever against a top-ranked opponent in Morgantown.
“Our win against Penn State means nothing if we don’t come out prepared for Wright State Monday evening,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Monday is a huge game for us, and we need to quickly recover and prepare for the Raiders.”
Monday is the second meeting between WVU and WSU. The then-No. 25 Mountaineers scored a 4-1 win in the series opener on Sept. 22, 2013, at Dick Dlesk Stadium. All-American Frances Silva finished the match with five points (1 G, 3 A), assisting on the team’s first three goals. Her three-assist effort was a then-program single-match record.
A pair of Mountaineers tallied their first goals of the 2017 season Saturday night, as forwards Sh’Nia Gordon and Lauren Segalla built a first half, two-goal cushion for WVU against Penn State. Gordon’s score in the 17th minute was her 13th career goal, while Segalla’s game-winner in the 37th minute was her first-ever tally in a Mountaineer uniform.
The Mountaineer attack has outscored opponents 5-1 in the last two matches. WVU currently shows a 1.75 goals-per-game average.
The WVU defense held PSU to just three shots on-goal, and sophomore Rylee Foster made one save for the win. The Cambridge, Ontario, native shows a 0.72 goals-against average (GAA).
The Raiders (3-2) earned their third win of the season with a 3-0 victory over St. Bonaventure on Aug. 31, in Dayton, Ohio. Senior midfielder Sara Colvin tallied the game-winner in the 12th minute for her second score of the season. She paced the team with three shots on-goal. Freshman Brittney Petrosky and sophomore Jordyne Helinski added insurance goals.
Sophomore Maddie Jewell made four saves for her first shutout of the season. As a team, the Raiders show a 1.343 GAA.
