It happens about once every 7 years. And the routine is always the same. Bowl games are on Monday. Monday is the New Year holiday.

I am not sure how long, but for as long as I can remember, if Jan 1 fell on a Sunday the games were played on the 2nd. The NFL has Sundays and most people get their holiday on the 2nd. Nothing is missed except the name "New Year's Day Bowl" and that has lost some of it's meaning with the BCS title game being later anyway.
