It sounded like the team voted not to pursue post-season play. That's disappointing.

Ummmmm...why would there be a vote by the players? These are people who are given a scholarship to come and play...hopefully build this program into something. Deciding you don't want to play is lame.

It's been a rough go for Miles over the last two years but I think he is the right guy. However, if he put this to a vote of the players, I think it was the wrong decision.

Not disagreeing with you, but either in 1967 or 68 the Nebraska football team had a chance to go too a bowl and they voted against it back then.

Maybe that is bad comparison because it was around 49 years ago.

Whether it was the players, the coach, or a combination of the two, it's just disappointing that either would choose not to play more.

Have to laugh at this one, but considering now that we are in the New B1G which only let one team go to a bowl game until 1975 or 76 and we made it to a bowl game with a losing record I quess I will stay satisfied with making it to bowl game instead of the Vegas 16.

I don't think that's it, because Purdue played in the CBI tourney just 3 years ago. On the baseball broadcast it sounded like our team decided not to play.

What was their record before the CBI.... Ohhh hell I quess it doesn't matter at this point but maybe they weren't below .500.

They just mentioned it on the baseball broadcast again, and the words "the team" chose to end their season were used. I know with the trip to Europe last summer, it's been a long season, but it still surprised me the team choose not to play before they even knew what matchups were available.

There is no good reason to go anywhere except the NCAA but if you are content with less then good results stay the course

Probably not a great comparison. Postseason for both basketball and football was not the big deal it is today unless you were one of the elite schools playing for a championship. I think Google would reveal some highly ranked teams in both sports from that era who chose to stay home, but obviously these days almost every basketball or football team with a pulse is invited to and accepts postseason play. Anyone who watched this team the past couple months probably isn't too shocked though. They were really hustling in the Wisconsin game but prior to that we saw a dozen games where it appeared they'd rather be elsewhere. Not a good reflection on the entire basketball program, IF the players did opt to end the season.

Nebraska has 7 NCAA tourney appearances, and ZERO wins. Saying Nebraska should never play in anything but the NCAA is about the most foolish thing I've ever read on this page.

We are not Kentucky or Kansas who could rightfully have that attitude. We are a laughing stock basketball program that has been building from the bottom for decades.

I get not going to the CBI or Vegas 16, but if Nebraska would have finished just over .500 and qualified for the NIT, and didn't go, that would be stupid.

There have been numerous schools that have used an NIT Championship as a springboard for a good tournament run the next year. The NIT could have helped Nebraska in the same way for next year.

Not that it would be tough to recruit against Nebraska, but IF Nebraska were competing for a recruit with another school with some actual basketball success in their history, it would be pretty easy to use a stupid policy of NCAA or nothing against Nebraska.

Nebraska needs building blocks for success to build for the future, not a overly aggorant policy nearly equal to Kansas or Kentucky turning down all bowl games if they don't make the College football playoff.

There will be plenty of teams that are on that bubble that won't make the Big dance, Michigan is one of them ( think they played their way in) if we had the record they had or Ohio St and was left out be stupid to turn down the NIT.

Little history we have but Nebraska has won the NIT before and that was a lot of fun winning it.

I don't mind if the kids decide when it comes to tournaments that aren't NCAA or NIT. As frustrating as the season was this year at times, it was equally rewarding to watch some of the young guys develop and really improve over the course of the year.

Call me a Cubs fan all you want, but I think we have the potential to turn into a good team in the next few years.

347 Division 1 Basketball teams
68 make NCAA
32 NIT
16 CBI
16 Vegas

So 38% of college teams make post season

VS Football

I believe there are 119 teams
41 bowl games

So 68% make bowl games.

So yea, NCAA or bust every year. Good idea.

I know we're comparing Apples to Oranges so to speak but I'm curious what TV station carries the CBI or Vegas 16? I believe None... No question there are too many bowl games but they are still shown on ESPN or ESPN2 besides ABC and CBS.... And do have more viewers for Football over Basketball.

I get what you are saying but out of those 347 D1 basketball teams about half really do not have a chance to make the dance unless they win their conference tourney. Think how many one bid leagues there are...

But I know what you mean. It is harder to make the dance and NU should not be thinking "Dance or nothing"

Mo Valley was a good example they very seldom received two berths in the NCAA when Creighton was in the conference and I'm sure that played one of the parts they went to the Big East besides $$.
Very good point JohnRossEwing.

The lack of basketball tradition at Nebraska should no longer factor into the equation. NU voluntarily upped the ante and expectations by investing millions into facilities for the program. They didn't do that just to maintain the sub-par status quo.

With that said, it is not reasonable to expect Nebraska to be an NCAA tournament team every year. However, it is reasonable - moving forward - to expect Nebraska to be at least a bubble team more often than not. This would have been a season where you wouldn't have expected them to be a bubble team because of the heavy reliance on Freshmen. Whether that should have been the case in MIles' 4th year is another debate.

In the future, the NIT should be viewed as a disappointment, not an achievement to be celebrated. The CBI and Vegas 16 (if that is, in fact, a real thing) should be considered the last ditch effort of a desperate program. If NU's name is not showing up in "Bracketology" conversations in the future, it should be considered a failure.

First of all, no college programs are democratic, but I agree with Miles' decision to put it to a player vote. If the team isn't going to show up and play their butts off, they weren't going to win anyway. The performance at the Big 10 tourney was as good of a "high note" to end the season as they were probably going to get.

I look forward to a better team next year with hopefully a more balanced and fundamentally intelligent half court offense.

agree with most of your post except the bolded . have read several different places about Nebraska's "run" in the conf tourney -- we essentially won one game against an unranked Wisconsin team (the Rutgers game was a play in game which is embarrassing enough to even have to play on Wed) .... making the final 8 of a 14 team conference tourney is hardly noteworthy ....

we have to start making the NCAA tourney on a regular basis ... the biggest thing college basketball has going for it is March Madness ... I don't know why any recruit would commit to a school if there isn't a reasonable chance that they are going to participate in the event annually

Miles is not stupid...he knows that if he goes to a lame tourney and gets donkey punched by some weird team that no one has ever heard of that things will be even more annoying for him.

Arguable 1 of the 2 or 3 hottest teams in the conference. Wisconsin beat Sparty (1-1), Hoosiers, Terps, Io_a with wins over (bubble) Michigan and Ohio State down the stretch for an impressive 11-2 finish. This wasn't the same Badger team that started the season or even conference play.
