Young lad on my block is on the BR Freshman team and when I was talking with him he said the freshman team is playing Crete this weekend and said PC doesn’t have a Freshman team....is this for real or was their a scheduling conflict...I know their numbers were low, but no Freshman team at a school like Providence??? Unreal

I did see that on the ST Laurence website that the Providence Freshmen game during week 7 or 8 was cancelled and they now have a scheduled game with New Trier. I also saw that their Freshmen game with DLS in week 9 was cancelled (as was last year's game)

I can think of 12,000 reasons why they don't have a Freshman team

They only have 21 or so freshman players so they are playing a combined fresh/soph schedule. It's too bad because even though their numbers are low, there are some very talented kids that are part of the group.

No frosh team at a school that was ranked Nationally consistently through the 90's and early 2000's is a sad state and doesnt boad well for the future of the program or the school for that matter

Recruiting isnt the problem. They pound the bushes and feet are hitting the pavement. Issue is bigger than that. They have tried desperately to get the alum back involved with creation of a Alumni club, guest coin flippers, and other ways of involving recruits and parents. Obviously numbers do not lie.
Why cant they keep the off-spring from the glory days?

Obviously being in a hotbed with LWE, LWW, and LWC and not to mention the soon resurgence of Lockport. The future might even look more bleak.

The JCA Title DEFINITELY did not help matters.

Funny thing is when they were nationally ranked years ago LWC was top notch, much like East is now, JCA was VERY competitive and Lockport was building rapidly! Why not now? Was it Senffner? Was he like the charismatic recruiter that Saban and Sweeney are?

It will take a minimum of two years for the Lockport rebirth to be measured...not a current factor for Providence. If the Porters can somehow make the playoffs this year George Czart would be HC of the decade.

PLAYOFFS this year for LP is beyond comprehension.
In 4 years LP will be challenging the big boys just like LWN did and every Czart team he has ever coached on. Czart is THAT good

21 is enough to play a freshman schedule. Not sure why people are embarrassed by a number like that and not willing to play a freshman schedule. I'd rather get experience for those 21 and lose than miss those games banking on winning sophomore games.
Problem is they only have 20 sophs as well. I'm told alot of the sophs dress for varsity for depth. So they wouldn't have enough sophs for a team either so it's just easier to compine the 2 for a soph team. There fresh have also played 2 games just arnt playing a full schedule.

Outfit...There are way more issues there unrelated to who the head coach is at Lockport. I think another question mark is if George can survive the community.

Why wouldnt he? I am sure he knew what he was getting himself into having been there with Bret Kooi. If he could survive LW community he can definitely survive LP.

I was told yesterday (not sure of the accuracy) that Provi has 14 freshmen left playing, down from 18 to start

Might that forfeit have played some role in the reduced turnout?

I would be shocked if that was a major factor in any kids decision.

The terrible publicity and poor school response to the abuse of the former administrator, all the neighboring Lincoln ways being viable and competitive options, and JCA winning a title all may play a role. First reason definitely the biggest one. Lincoln ways probably stealing a few dozen each year I assume

The main reason for decline is the cost of tuition. When there are good public schools all around pc the parents are already paying 10k a yr in taxes for. If the CPS had a half way decent option for kids in mt Greenwood and Beverly area you would see enrollment drop at br mc st. Personally if I'm a homeowner especially with kids in mt Greenwood I would cause an uproar that they do not have there own high school

Morgan Park is the closest open public option. Actually them or Julian. The People of Mt. Greenwood have been fighting for Ag to be a neighborhood school for years. It will never happen as that would cause at least one CCL school to close. Queen of Marytrs and St. Christina have both seen a massive drop in enrollment while the neighborhood CPS elementary schools are over crowded.

I dont get why you say it will never happen. If a catholic has closed so be it. The residents of mt greenwood pay taxes and deserve there own school. I dont wish it soon any of the Southside catholic schools. But if I'm paying a mortgage on a 300k home plus 5 grand in taxes I want a high school to attend

If majority of high schools kids from mt greenwood went public instead of private the public schools would not be able to house the students. Also I said a decent option morgan park is the 579th rank high school in illinois out of 649.

If Ag school stopped busing it would barely be filled. This neighborhood, paying tuition is a part of adult life.
Doesn't mean it should be. Like previous poster said the catholic grade schools are struggling where do you think those kids are going. They are going to the public grade school because there is a decent option. Same would happen at the high school level.

Getting into the Ag school if your from the Mt. Greenwood or Beverly area is not as difficult as it once was. In fact I know a ton of people that send their kids their and I can’t tell you the last person I heard that was denied enrollment to the Ag school from the neighborhood.

That being said, of all the families I know who have kids there, and it’s probably over 25 families, maybe 3 of their kids play sports and none of them are really that into it...I don’t see the Ag school ever becoming that dominate or proficient in any sport that would lure an athlete away from a South Side area Catholic high school. Plus, as of now, they play in the lowest of CPS divisions. It’s just not an attractive school for neighborhood athletes for men or women’s sports.

It is the small school factor and they do not play in the lowest divisions. Would not take a ton of kids to be very good in 4a football.

Yes alot of kids would go there but to think there would be 4000 and the athletes would flock there to build a powerhouse is nuts. It would still be a cps school.
All these athletes in various Catholic hs in various sports are gonna want to go play in cps leagues? Outside of basketball don't think any other public league sport is strong or even average. People complain about districts cause it would ruin football at carmel and rita but people would send their kids to the ag school? To only have 3 or 4 meaningful games, no full lower level schedule, teams dont show up. Dont see people signing up for that around here.
Lacrosse is booming at all catholic schools boys and girls. CPS even offer it?
Now districts may actually help the ag school angle if they had non cps schools on the schedule. But even then neighborhood isn't struggling financially to where it would tilt toward filling ag. Too much tradition.
I can only speak for southwest Chicago grammar school issues. People are moving, not having 7 kids, or the neighborhood has drastically went down economically. Rita, Bede, Thomas More, Bernadette, etc.
Mt Greenwood is filled but if some kids couldn't play decent sports I'm pretty sure alot would go where they could even if that meant paying.
So both things could be true. Ag school could be filled with neighborhood kids just not the higher end athletes.

Districts mean Ag-MG would play Oak Forest, Lemont, Shepard, Tinley Pk. I've heard residency removal is being dangled in exchange for no/low raises, but may an airtight boundary Ag be another card to play?

Ag is a 4a school. They would play none of those teams.

They would be borderline 5a. And after t years I think there enrollment would grow as a previous poster said causing one of the catholic schools to potentially close.

This is the difference in mindset between a small (4a or smaller) and big school. 21 freshmen at an ICE school would be one of the bigger freshman squads in the conference. 21 at Providence is a nightmare...

This is like the posts about Sandwich dropping their "JV" schedule for the rest of the season...Sandwich, 700 kids in the "new I-8", realistically can't compete with the 6A schools in the reconfigured conference. So the good sophs will dress varsity, the bad sophs will dress with the freshmen on Friday night. It appears that some of the ICE schools are doing the same - all the sophs dress on Friday, some varsity, some filling out the frosh squads...
