Not ranked in AP poll either.

I am glad we don't have high expectations early on. Hopefully we can prove it on the field this year.

i usually prefer to be un-ranked starting the season just outside of the rankings like in the top 30-35. Win our first 4 and we will probably be ranked by then.

Big10 has 7 teams ranked, that was surprising to me. Can’t believe Nebraska is in. I think they’re definitely on the come-up, but at least prove it on the field, geez.

It makes sense when you look at how many sportswriters came from Big 10 schools.

Why on earth would we be ranked? We under achieved last year and then lost our best players.

It's great these guys think so highly of us

Preseason rankings:

They were the best last season, too:

Even the Massey Ratings, which were used in the official BCS playoff calculation, has us #11: https://www.masseyratings.com/cf/ncaa-d1/ratings

but we went 8-5 last year and 4-4 in conference. Either we are a glitch in their system or we are underperforming to a massive degree. Neither makes me feel great.

Only because they got the UCF coach, and the poll may very well be right.

We clearly under performed last year but when you look at a lot of stats we were in elite company.

Local sports radio in Orlando last night said we were alone with Bama and Clemson last year in net yards per play. We were +2 in a yards per play statistic.

Guessing it's more of the former than the latter. All the defensive stats correctly showed our defense was basically top one or two in the country. Our offensive stats showed we should have been pretty decent on offense, but it's because we dominated weak defenses and also had pretty good showings against decent defenses in Auburn and A&M, which hides how inept we were against good defenses. I think those stat systems just don't do well accounting for a unit that just drops off a cliff against good competition. So you look at the stats, and it looks like combining our defense and offense should give you a top 10 team. But you look at how our offense drops off a cliff against good defenses, and you realize it's hard for us to win against teams with a top 15 defense. Even as atrocious as our offense was, it would have taken pretty minimal improvement to swing the UK and UF games, at which point we look like a top 5-10 team at the end of the regular season, and would maybe have a shot at winning in a NY6 bowl, depending on matchup.

I'll never understand this logic from MSU fans. It basically means that you like people thinking you stink, which means that you haven't earned respect.

It's a fact that we were 2 dropped passes from being 10-3. The fans are emotional about that, while the computers are not.

It's not a fact, it's an assumption. We just don't know. The fact is, we lost 5 games.

There is only one poll that matters. It doesn't come out for another few months or so. It has always been good to Miss State. That's the one I care about.

speaking of things that don't matter... I think it was 247sports that had a preseason true freshman all america team. That's the most asinine thing I've ever heard.
