Not so sure about that...you're talking 3 more titles when we haven't been to a Final 4 in what, 4 years? Football was 1 win from playing in the SEC title game this year, which means they were 1 win from making the playoffs. I think we could very well be a legitimate threat to make that championship game as early as next year. If that happens, you'd have to say that football is closer to its first championship than basketball is to 3 more championships.

We weren’t a win away from the playoffs. We dropped a terrible game to ut. Winning the east is the next step then it gets much more difficult to win the sec title game. This season will tell us a lot about our future in football. As for passing UCLA I don’t think it will happen in the next 20 years

If Kentucky football turns out another great season, will it start to overshadow basket ball a little?
I love and intensely follow both sports. My interest in one would never take a hit because of the success of the other. That's ridiculous to me.

Half of yall bandwagon another team in football anyway.

Billy Donovan won back-to-back championships, went to a couple more Final Fours and several Elite Eights. In other words, the program had sustained success for nearly two decades. Did Florida become a basketball school? Not even close.

Kentucky football has a long way to go to match what Florida did in basketball beginning in 1999. And it still didn't change the culture in Gainesville -- and it wouldn't in Lexington.
Florida didn’t have the basketball fan support despite NC championships. Football here is a totally different animal.

The SEC isn’t conducive to basketball, period,

Kentucky football may never achieve the equivalent of what Donovan did at Florida. But despite that, we have (almost) always supported our football program far better than they have basketball, especially considering they won back-to-back championships.

I've always felt the best-kept secret in college sports is how very, very much UK fans love football, despite almost no real success since Bryant left. You can't say that about Florida vis-a-vis basketball, or any other football school that has tasted some success in hoops.

What are we? Louisville now?

The dirty birds act like they are national powerhouses steeped in tradition and consistantly in the top 25...

UK needs a decade straight of last season to even discuss being close to casting a shadow over the bball program.. just my 2 cents

Football is the premier sport in America. Only in Ky, indiana and possibly nc does bball even rival the popularity of Football. Should Ky EVER sniff a national championship in Football, Football would be every bit as big as bball.

IMO, the biggest difference in bball and Football is the relevance of the regular season. The bball reg season means nothing whereas every game in Football is significant. The only advantage bball has over Football is the tournament. Even then, the Final Four in Football is bigger than the Final Four in bball.

Having a good football team won't overshadow UK hoops. Just makes the spotlight at UK that much brighter. It would be a great thing to have something like football and basketball alums come back and have a charity softball game with Cal being the umpire. If only the could get to that level but it seems like a big step to be one of the best in college football.

I lean towards being a bigger UK football fan than a UK basketball fan, but it’s pretty close.

I love all UK sports and attend many games/events during the season. But, even if Stoops keeps winning and doubt very much ball would even be equal to basketball at UK. I had season tickets for football (had to give those up) and basketball. The gap in fans interest would probably narrow but I just don't see it making it over the top of basketball and and have others thinking of us as a football school. I would love to see the football team continue to improve and someday even win a NT while I'm still alive. May not happen in football but I think I have a good chance to see at least 1 or 2 more national titles.

To the poster who said if the coaching staff got the top pay then things might happen for football over basketball. I tend to disagree with that as Stoop now makes over $4 a year and ranks 23rd in the nation and 7th in the SEC in annual salary. That's pretty good pay for a school that hasn't won much in football. I know it's different from Cal's salary but that ain't chumps pay. Also, do you really believe Stoops becomes much better coach than now just if he gets more money? He is what he is and I doubt we see a major change just because he gets more money. Just throwing that out there.

Our house is probably:

1. Baseball
2. Football
3. basketball

UK baseball has had some success recently that seems to go unnoticed by most people. We have several UK players in major league baseball right now and....fun-fact....the SEC has over 2x the number of players in MLB compared to any other conference. It's loaded with SEC players. I know, baseball gets very little love around these forums and nobody much seems to care. But, it is another sport that UK has represented very well in lately.

So you think Kentucky is the only school with good football and good basketball? Most Kentucky fans can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Admittedly, I'm a Football fan. Should Ky ever begin competing for nc's in Football, bball won't be forgotten in Ky, but people won't be paying much attention until Football season and the bowls are over.

Exactly. 8 NCs and all time wins aren’t going away. That history is there. Football is so huge, when you get good at it, it just pulls the attention, stirs the drink, eats first at the table etc.

The thing is not only would the football team have to have consistent success but also the basketball team would have to go into a tailspin IMO for football to overtake basketball.

And if we are being honest here, both of those things are unlikely.

But there's no reason why one can't be excited about both........even if one stays more important than the other. The football team had a great season last year and hopefully they build upon that success this season.

CatgotMytoungue- I would be shocked, but would welcome it. Would love to see the day football is cherished as much as basketball. I love both, and hope both succeed equally. Would be great!

It won’t erase basketballs history, but if football is in the BCS hunt, it will be year round talk by the media. Just the nature of football being of the grand scale it is.

What has UK football done in its entire history to suggest we’d have consistent success?

I mean I hope like heck I’m wrong about that. But UK playing in the SEC it’s hard to have consistent success. UT and UF aren’t going to be down forever.

The lack of commitment financially for decades has been UKs biggest enemy. That has changed. We are seeing the results.
The past is not the future. Well we drop Games against Florida and Tennessee in the future? Yes but not to the likes of our past.

Success brings fans. Fans bring dollars. Fans bring expectations. With expectations we can demand better, and get better.

No. Love Kentucky football but last year was the first time they’ve had a winning SEC record in 4 decades.

We are historically downright embarrassing and awful / well below average/ bottom dweller.

UK football has to actually sustain success... before it’s even in the same conversation.

Btw I think we win 8 this year and 10 next year (which is awesome and would be 3 consecutive good-great seasons which is absolutely a step in the right direction of being a respectable football program)

Kentucky is the only program in America that actually has a portion of its own fans that pull against the overwhelming #1 sport. Many football only fans actually pull against the basketball team and it is pure jealousy. For decades, it is the same tired refrain; “we would win more in football if we only devoted less money to basketball and more to the gridiron”

I also love the football pays the bills argument. Football gets so much money at UK because of the success of Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, etc. We benefit because of the TV contracts. In basketball, the whole conference rakes in tons of money because of UK.

I agree football is stronger now and that is because the star players MUST stay 3 years. College basketball faces an uncertain future; especially if the straight out of HS to the NBA is implemented.

For those judging UK fans for having a secondary team... I grew up in Indiana, although my entire family is from Kentucky. Try finding a UK football game on TV or radio through the 80s, 90s, and most of the early 00s in Indiana. Remember this is before the internet, streaming, SECN, etc. Heck, you couldn't even find UK football boxscores in the paper most of the time. UK football simply wasn't available to me. ...but Notre Dame football was. Now I don't put either one ahead of the other, but keep in mind, UK football didn't exist for people outside Lexington airwaves for a lot of some people's lifetime.
