Kentucky is the only program in America that actually has a portion of its own fans that pull against the overwhelming #1 sport. Many football only fans actually pull against the basketball team and it is pure jealousy. For decades, it is the same tired refrain; “we would win more in football if we only devoted less money to basketball and more to the gridiron”

I also love the football pays the bills argument. Football gets so much money at UK because of the success of Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, etc. We benefit because of the TV contracts. In basketball, the whole conference rakes in tons of money because of UK.

I agree football is stronger now and that is because the star players MUST stay 3 years. College basketball faces an uncertain future; especially if the straight out of HS to the NBA is implemented.
I don’t think your post is fair.

First of all, while the rest of the SEC was participating in the football arms race, Previous ADs were starving the cash cow while spending much focus and attention on men’s basketball because of what Rupp built. The SEC bowl money was about the only thing to bail us out. Hell, Rich Brooks told UK to get with the 21st Century.

Second, “jealousy” is s really misguided term for our football-first fans. Mostly due in part to what I posted above—i would call it grief and anger over years of neglect in deference to the men’s team. Don’t take this the wrong way, but when we are spoken of as a “basketball school”, it’s not necessarily meant as a compliment.

Don’t forget there are also “basketball only” fans on this site. Where’s the outrage over them?

Thanks Mitch!

(That’ll ruffle some feathers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )
Look, Mitch is an overall good AD. I'm not anti-Mitch, but he is far from perfect and makes some real head scratching decisions. I wouldn't trade Mitch, but would like to ask him why he claims to listen to fans on some things, but turns a deaf ear to fans on others.

Both can be enjoyed the same and supported the same. Hell the attention our football program is getting might take some pressure off the young bball cats as well. I love them both equally and pumped about both programs.

Just curious, do you kill deer for sport/ wall trophies or food? I notice the bucks in your avatar. My brother in law hunts but he uses his “winnings” to make deer Jerky, burgers etc

Not so sure about that...you're talking 3 more titles when we haven't been to a Final 4 in what, 4 years? Football was 1 win from playing in the SEC title game this year, which means they were 1 win from making the playoffs. I think we could very well be a legitimate threat to make that championship game as early as next year. If that happens, you'd have to say that football is closer to its first championship than basketball is to 3 more championships.

To be fair UK football was also a close loss or 2 from another mediocre bowl game.

I pretty much agree wholeheartedly. He annoys me majorly at times but I can’t help but recognize and appreciate the success we are having with many of our sports programs.

I’ll get **** but whatever...

UK is obviously my primary and true love but I do sorta root for and follow Miami Hurricanes. My grandfather (from Miami) whom I was very close to, was a HUGE Jimmy Johnson/ Miami fan (and cowboys) so I grew up watching and pulling for Miami as well. I’m a Lions fan in football (we always suck) though ever since I first saw Barry Sanders run when I was about 7 years old.

I totally get having a secondary team to follow AFTER UK football. I dig some Michigan State and ASU football

Admittedly, I'm a Football fan. Should Ky ever begin competing for nc's in Football, bball won't be forgotten in Ky, but people won't be paying much attention until Football season and the bowls are over.

This is incredibly inaccurate.

Yes, for some. But I wouldn't go so far to say "incredibly accurate". It would take a solid decade of being a perennial top 25 football team to cut into basketball interest after BBM.
Not sure where you listen to radio but Football talk permeated local airwaves well into and after the Citrus Bowl win.

Football is simply a more popular sport than bball. IMO, Ky bball is big to its fans because of winning. If Football became a perennial winner, Ky fans would be like fans everywhere else.

Spend a week in central Indiana at anytime over the past few decades (outside the past couple years) and then ask how much you hear about UK football.

Not sure why UK Football should get airtime there. In Lexington, there’s no Ohio State coverage

Oh, I get that. My point was to other posters saying they don't know how UK fans could have a secondary football team. My answer was, not every UK fan grew up under Lex airwaves and modern sports streaming technology.

Fans that follow one bball team and a different Football team are perfect illustrations of the point I made about winning.
Ky bball is popular because they've generally won. Those that follow crappy schools' Football teams, like noter damn, do so because they win.
I'll go one step further. Ky is NOT a bball state. Ky is a UK bball state (again because of winning). If Football every wins big, it will overtake bball or at least people won't be interested in bball until after Football season is over. Don't know why it pains some to admit it.

If Kentucky football turns out another great season, will it start to overshadow basket ball a little?

Never, but it sure is nice having a good program for once. I hope Stoops keeps this up. I’d love to win the east one year and have a shot to win the SEC but Bama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn are all tough to get to the top. Luckily only one of them can win the west but it would be cool to get there.

Only way is if the football team make the playoffs final four, which will never happen imo.

SECN in central Indy (Spectrum) bumped the UK game for Ole Miss vs Ark, even though it is listed. UK football just doesn't register.

There’s nothing to admit because that is not true .
