He was at the Racquet Club here in Memphis. As always Coach was super nice, very personable. It was a fairly small group so I think coach felt like he could open up a bit. Here's what he had to say:

About last year (and last year’s players)
-They really thought Sidney would be eligible last year. When the Arkansas game rolled around and he still wasn't eligible, they knew the ncaa would never clear him for the year.
-Sidney's nickname is "shug" - I think coach probably means suge, aka suge knight, but I'm just guessing. I tried to explain who suge knight was to coach so he could gain some street cred but whatever
-The Kentucky tourney game still makes him sick. He definitely thinks UK gets preferential treatment. Said the SEC assures him that type lane violation will be called this year (even though that's been the rule forever).
-They wanted to redshirt Lewis but couldn't because of depth issues
-Reik was completely clueless last year. Said the coaches would tell him to do things and he would always say "yes sir" when asked if he did it. They eventually realized "yes sir" was simply what he said when he didn't understand what they were saying...literally.
-Said Varnardo was told by the Heat to play in Italy for one year, then they would bring him back and sign him to a two year contract. I guess we’ll see about that. Said Varnardo complains about the food there (is there anything that guy actually likes to eat other than skittles?)

About this year (and this year’s players)
-Sidney is unbelievable. Easily the most talented player to ever play at State. IF he works hard, he will be a top 5 pick. Note: He said Jarvis couldn’t come close to guarding Sidney in the paint last year. In fact, he said he’s unguardable in the paint. My wool is thick with Sidney, which worries me.
-Said Elgin is STILL not 100% healthy. I didn’t realize he recovered from his ankle enough to almost play last February (they just thought it was too late in the year) but then he blow out his ACL?? That’s what he’s trying to recover from now? I missed that somewhere.
-Said he wants Benok to start because he’s a senior. I’m dead serious, that’s what he said. We’ll see.
-He told Kodi he was completely disappointed in his season last year and expects him to correct it this year.
-Told Ravern he’s an outstanding shooter but he better start changing the games in more ways than simply hitting shots. His way of saying Ravern’s defense better pick up I suppose.
-Said Brian Bryant’s JC coach said he’s the best leader he’s ever been around. Who did he pass to get that distinction? Brandon Vincent.
-Said Twanny’s better and don’t be surprised to see him and Bost playing at the same time so Dee can be more of a scorer (which he said Dee REALLY likes to do – just his way of saying Dee pouts when he doesn’t get to score much. No surprise there).
-Speaking of Dee. He said he told Dee last night and this morning he’s better count his blessings. Dee was this close to being done forever. He has a second chance and that Dee has nothing to complain about now. In fact he said, “Dee, I don’t want to hear anything negative out of your mouth again - ever.” He said Dee understands that (again, we’ll see). He also guaranteed that Dee would be back his senior year.

Interesting Tidbits
-They are trying to move a November game to December to get Dee eligible by the 1st SEC game
-They are going to play only one exhibition game this year but not until Dec 15th (I think). Why? So Sidney can play one game right before he’s eligible for the tourney games.
-Was asked about why kids transfer so much (at State and everywhere else) he said it’s a reflection on this generation. They have no patience and they don’t want to work for anything. Athletes are even worse because they are spoiled and the limited recruiting now makes it hard to evaluate a kid’s character like they use to. I didn’t know you can only go to 4 games per year of the recruit’s senior season? Check this out: he said he’s had two players (no names) over the last couple of years that 100% believed they would be one and done (worse case scenario, two years then done). Neither of those two players were good enough to even come off the bench. He said it’s an epidemic. No surprise there though.

I think I read somewhere, maybe here, that RayVern might start the year suspended for missing class.....don't know if this is true?

A) We could have Turner start the year @ 3, nope.
B) Slide Osby up @ 3 and get him increased minutes there early, nope.
C) Select between Steele and Bryant because obviously Tranny has the point locked down?......nope.
D) Benock starting the year with lots of minutes @ 2/3 actually makes sense given our depth issues, let that sink in.
E) Sitting Benock's *** down once RayVern returns and especially once Dee returns to get quality minutes for a more talented Steele/Bryant is imporant and will probably drag on longer than it should. Because we all know that once Cunningham leaves we will replace him with Shane Power and then once Grant leaves we will replace him with Riley Benock, awesome!

If Bailey isn't healthy,Wendell and specifically Kodi better get ready to play a shitpile of minutes early.

Thanksto the original poster for the update.

because it would give us two strong player leaders next year in Bryant and Bailey...something we completely lacked this past year.

You need a few guys you can count on to be there for 4-years and give some stability to the team. When we signed him i thought he'd transfer after a year, but he's hung around and has actually given us decent minutes most of the time. He's not going to make the highlight reel much but he does play solid defense and is one of the few guys not exclusively looking for his shot every time he touches the basketball.

I imagine he'll start the first few games but will doubt he sees more then 15 minutes most nights.

I think Rick is probably stretching a bit about players who thought they would be one and done and couldn't get off the bench unless he's talking about guys like Rimmer and Houston. But who knows maybe those guys really did think they were future 1st round picks.

But most all of them are divas which makes it hard to coach these days. I don't buy, however, that they don't get to know the kids character. Most coaches are on guys for at least 2 if not 3 years, following their AAU teams and such. They talk to the kids enough to figure out if they are idiots or not and it's not hard to tell who hustles on the floor and who doesn't.

For instance take Jamont vs. Kodi. They both jack up horrible shots, but I never questioned Jamont's overall effort. Dude played hard on defense as well. We've all seen how Kodi handles himself in most cases. I'd be shocked if you couldn't see signs of that in HS and Prep School. In the end most coaches risk it on talented guys.

I think Rick is starting to pay more attention though. The two freshmen are supposed to be very hard-nosed players with good leadership qualities and from what I've seen of Deville he does to.

Thanks for all the info gtown - good stuff

I could easily see Osby thinking he was capable of gettin gone after 1 year. I saw interviews with him before he came and he was modest/humble and well spoken, but he had a **** ton of hype as a Jr and early on as a Sr. Thats gotta take awhile to get out of your system, he could have come to MSU thinking he could bolt after a year.
As for who else- Rhodes because of his cockiness early on, Sharpe because he was just bat **** crazy, Goodridge because of his skill set in HS and hype, the Delks because they apparently never faced reality, Augustus because he never found out his shine isnt quite as bright in the eyes of others.

And i agree with you on your point concerning coaches knowing about these guys. Come the hell on. EVERYONE who even mildly follows college basketball knew Sidney was an out of shape extreme talent. Point is, its not like these players arent well known. They travel the same damn route every summer hitting Las Vegas and Augusta and Hampton, VA etc etc while the coaches follow right behind the entire month of July. Its not like you and your staff can watch players over and over and over again but not see their personalities come out.

About Benock, Stansbury said he hopes he starts if he gets more aggressive. Basically saying he thinks he can elevate his game a little more, whereas in the past he's been happy being passive and not shooting much. I know, I know...

He said good things about Shaunessy Smith and Jalen Steele as well. I think he expects contributions from both this year. He said Shaunessy is very athletic, I also took it to believe that he expects him fully healthy this year. Stans said Steele is an excellent shooter and actually encouraged Lebo to recruit him, but when the change happened at Auburn and our roster shook up Stans jumped on him.

He said Bryant is a unique player and has a good mid-range game. As Gtown said, he was very complimentary of Bryant. I'm excited about this guy.

Stans specifically pointed out what a good passer Sidney is. He thinks Renardo is unstoppable in the paint and that we can surround him with good shooters for a good inside/outside game. He's concerned about Renardo's conditioning right now.

He also said Reik should be a different player this year because he's progressed with the speed of the game and communicating with others. Said he'll be an important part of the team surviving until Renardo can come back. I came away from this expecting to see Reik playing regularly. Not 20 minutes a game or anything, but he expects him to be a contributing body early in the season.

I think for the first time in a while he feels like he has a team that can be as physical as anyone. That'll be a nice change of pace from the last couple years.

Maybe this is common knowledge but he said the practice facility won't open until March. I didn't realize that, I thought it was supposed to be done late this semester or around the holidays.

a block,a couple of rebounds and a point or two a game that would be a huge contribution for him. His length alone can alter at least one possession. Anything else from him is a bonus this year.

All the **** he has to put up with. I question his coaching ability for not having the offense more organized. But damn, its like herding cats.

Now if the boys can just sit with Meo in the stands and get them off the bench during the game in their cute little uniforms, maybe the coaches can say what they want to during timeouts without the little ones eagerly clinging to every word.

What happened? I thought we had the best shot of anyone to land him.

They dropped him to low interest because he isn't taking an official visit here. He has already said he isn't taking an official visit because he comes here all the time (and he does). I think we end up landing him but he could still jump over to the ACC and it wouldn't shock me.

The drop is just a recruiting site reacting to a situation without having the facts.

He's concerned about Renardo's conditioning right now.

Does anyone else find this a bit odd. How long has he had to get back into shape. I know he looked like someone shoved an air hose up his butt back in the spring but as a 19-20 year old athlete, shouldn't he be able to get into shape over 7-8 months? I specifically remember training for an event at this age and it did not take 8 months to get into very good shape and I sure didn't have a strength coach/trainer/diet plan etc. I hope this is not a glimpse into the fact that he has more talent than any other player but has the commitment level of a sloth. Hope I am wrong.

I know a guy (I know, I hate it when people use that phrase) that hung out with Brian Johnson, and he honestly thought he would be one and done after his first year playing at MSU. So it's not just the Osby's and Jerrel Houston's of the world, ALL these guys think that

What the hell would I say about any of that?
That stood out so I felt it was the only thing I read. I really think B could be OK but he has to play both ends of the floor.

But our boy got us the crew and the car..........really makes you wonder WTF sometimes; we are MSU so we should be thankful for what we have, I suppose.

The missing piece of the puzzle is the coach turning over just enough control of the situation to hire an X & O's guy and let him do his job. Maybe we got that, maybe we didn't. My money is on didn't.

To start the season: Augustus should start every game @ 5 playing between 30-35 min and be that go to guy with his hand up asking for the ball. The other four guys are whoever is healthy enough to suit up.
Dumbass answer: "Kodi's a 4, we have got to work Reik in and get Wendell some quality minutes. Once we figured out Reik's language of clicks and clacks, we realized that he was telling the coach to "BLOW ME COACH" which we had to interpret as "Coach, I need a few minutes on the bench to rest" Now he is in shape this year with hisknees healed much better......our strength is down low.....WRONG.

Figure out quickly who is tough enough to be this year's Turner/Slater/Harper/Gholar/Hamilton, read undersized guy @ 6'5" orso who plays out of position in our 4 out, 1 in, offense. We don't have sufficient coaching even against ****** opponents to make our offense work with two actual big guys (Reik + Kodi, or Kodi + Lewis) in at the same time. MaybeBenock could be this guy for the first 9 games?

If Bailey and Smith are still injured too badly to contribute, evaluate that prior to the season, don't waste time with them, get minutes for Steele/Bryant or Wendell if he shows any promise at all. Fully expect that this will not be the case. Best case scenario, please let them be healed and contribute meaningfully.

Please havegotten RayVern on steroids this summer? Maybe 200 lbs @ 6'6" SR year? Is that too much to ask, well yeah, I suppose it is?

Such a love hate relationship.
