Cohen has only had 1 recruiting class...people dont really realize how much we slipped in Polk's 2nd tenure until you point out where we finished in the SEC during those years.

Oh I forgot, it's ok to lose during your grace period or when you're perceived to be ******. But once you build expectations, you better watch your back. Our coaches would probably be better off never getting over the hump

who just got his first recruits on the field a month ago? I disagree with Coach on Stans, but the fact is for good or bad whatever happens on the basketball court is 100% to Stans's credit or fault. It's his team, his coaches and his players. You can judge Cohen in another couple of years, but for now he's playing with a bunch of Polk leftovers and 1st-year players. Skip Bertman couldn't have come into this program and won immediately and it's not fair to expect John Cohen (or any other coach) to.

You get a little time to build it up and get your players in there, and then at some point you do have to start winning games. I am not sure why you are just now grasping that concept

left him. Look, Cohen does deserve this year as another 'rebuilding year'. I get it . But you guys that think we need 3,4, or even 5 years to get this program back to where it needs to be are being ridiculous. Our baseball program has too much tradition to not be able to turn this thing around quickly. All historically successful programs do not rebuild, they RELOAD.Saban turned Alabama football around in year 2 . Calipari turned UK basketball around in year 1 . Maineri turned LSU baseball around in year 2.You guys that believe that Cohen needs more time than 2 yearsis beyond me . This is MSU baseball, not MSU football.

it's easier to rebuild when you have the extra scholly advantage some of the other states have- not to mention LSU gets anybody they want in Louisiana

Manieri ran alot of people off, got the best in-state talent, and with the extra scholly's pulled in a couple others from other places...it does make a rebuilding job easier when you can have much changeover in one season and get rid of the crap that has infested the program. Cohen didnt have that luxury.

**edited to add**- I don't know the answer to this, but I'm willing to bet the recruiting class Manieri inherited when he got hired was much, much better than the one Cohen inherited from Polk in June- 2008

not one that thinks this thing is gonna take 5 years. I don't think anyone does, really. I just don't think some of you people really understand the depth of sucktitude that our baseball program had sunk to. Our pitching staff the previous two years was probably one of the worst in the history of the SEC, if not the worst. Our position players weren't much better. Hell half of them can't field ground balls. Comparing our rebuilding to that of UK, Alabama, etc is just not very accurate whatsoever either. For one, it's easy to rebuild in basketball. Bring a coupld of top draft picks in and boom, you're awesome. Alabama in football, while they suffered under previous coaches, still brought in a great deal of talent so it was more a matter of bringing the best college coach in America in. Also, LSU was not lacking talent when they weren't getting it done with Smoke, I can assure you. Overall, our main problem is that fact that over the past 3 seasons, our talent level was on par with about Belhaven's. In order to change that, Cohen obviously has to first recruit the players here. So far, he's doing that as evident by last years class (and this one so far). I can reasonably say that after a few top 15 classes this ship will get righted. Those expected us to be badass after 1 recruiting class are reaching a little bit. Now if he starts pulling in these top 15/20 classes and we still are sucking, then something's not working. I am not sure whether y'all know it or not, but we were picked to finish last in the SEC West for a reason and that isn't John Cohen.

Bythen his first recruits will be Juniors. That is when they would go pro if they are any good. So he gets a pass this year and next. It's hard to reload when you don't have anything to start with. No way you can even compare basketball to baseball, that was just plain dumb.

Alabama football?? National championship past
Kentucky basketball? National championship past
LSU baseball? National championship past

State baseball?? Clark, Palmiero, and Thigpen in 1985

We do not have a championship program at Mississippi State no matter how many people Polk has brainwashed that we do

Fish was talking about it taking time to restock talent and how our cupboard was bare...and then I pointed out what those programs had that we didnt when trying to recruit and restock that talent

It's much easier to recruit to those places to restock talent with NC's than it is to places without them

**edited to add**- i just 17'ing got it...funny man today huh?

First of all, LSU didn't put up with Smoke for seven years.

That's the main difference. Put someone crappy at LSU for seven years that only recruits out of a camp and see what happens.

Secondly, the one thing Smoke DID do was recruit pitching including Louis Coleman. That is totally different from us because Polk left us with none. They had the opposite problem from us- they had no hitting. They had enough pitching that in Manieri's first year, they were able to win 30 games, I believe. It's a lot easier to rebuild when you have pitching because it is a lot harder to find and it takes longer to develop pitching as opposed to hitters.

LSU also was planning on building a new stadium while Smoke was still there, and we let our facilities deteriorate.
