Umm I'm not CNN. That area and Paris are a shell of what once was a great city.

I was there for four days last year; place was awesome. I was in the tourist sections, and the only part that sucked was getting harassed by immigrant street vendors on the lawn outside the Eiffel Tower. Now on the drive out to the airport, I think we may have gone through Syria, but I wasn't spending any time there.

Interesting short read on 3d imaging of the cathedral.

https://www.wired.com/story/the-not...r2Le49z2VPz7KDPkrfK-tzLuYLaNzoNG8G8JM-InvGmnk

For the last half-decade or so, an architectural historian named Andrew Tallon worked with laser scanners to capture the entirety of the cathedral’s interior and exterior in meticulous 3D point clouds. His billion points of light revealed a living structure; the magnificent flying buttresses had indeed held the walls true, but the Gallery of Kings, statues on the western facade, were a foot out of plumb, Tallon told National Geographic in 2015.

Have you gone there? I was there last year. It was phenomenal.

Some friends of ours were there last December and said it was amazing. The pics they had confirmed that, and we'd love to make that trip one day. Love to see Spain and Portugal as well.

Given the tragedy that has happened in France, a country that has fought on our side in nearly every war the US has been involved in since 1776, the snarky comments reflects poorly on those that want to insult the entire nation. I guess it is easy for some to dismiss that they fought for four years in the blood and trenches just 100 years ago, plus in Vietnam (where we did not learn a thing from their experience), in North Africa in WWII, fought all the way to Moscow in 1812, and have been our friends and allies for centuries. Maybe it is just me, I just think maybe one should just refrain for the moment from humor that is in poor taste.

:pray:This looks pretty good & reconstructable to me. Don't know where they'll find 900 year old timbers to replace those lost. What a monument to humanity's best.

The French get a bad wrap for not fighting in WWII. Read up on the French during WWI - those dudes lost a generation of young men. It broke their will.

Im not a veteran, so you can correct me if I’m speaking out of turn here, but I assume all but the absolute worst parts of Afghanistan and Iraq would have been a picnic compared to being on the front lines of WWI. And that’s not taking away from anything our veterans of the most recent wars went through.

It's not that they didn't fight, it's just that they are bad fighters.

-Napoleon.

-Charlemagne. Charles Martel....there would be no western society/culture if it weren't for these dudes.

-if it weren't for the French Navy there would be no USA.

France certainly was not my Virginia based ancestors oldest Ally.

They appreciated their opportunistic efforts during the revolution.

Western culture would have been fine minus Napoleon. France pretended to be Democratic. England practiced it.

Modern England owes a great deal to Norman's...so.....

They can be real a-holes at times, but great post.

My mother's ancient ancestor was one of William the Conqueror's top leaders.

A visit to see the Bayeux Tapestry is worthwhile.

-napoleon was an example of a good warrior. The western culture bit was stated after listing charlemagne and Martel for a reason. Europe would've fallen to the mohammadists were it not for them.

-england *still* has a monarchy and an aristocracy...im an anglophile, but they were not an egalitarian society until very recently, historically speaking.

The fact that those pussies haven't kicked Prince Charles and his merry band of bitches out yet shows me why we smoked their asses back in the 1700's. Still love England, but they can call us daddy.

How were the falafels?

I f'ing love falafels. Didn't have one in Paris. They're all over the place in Germany, btw. You know my favorite city? MFing Istanbul. That's where. Partied like I was on Spring Break in Cancun while I was there. Of course, three weeks later there were tanks shooting people on the bridge above where I was partying.
