I'm not taking their side here - and Djokovic also misrepresented information on his application. I think he should have played it differently. You're clearly too unhinged on the topic to have a civil conversation about it, so I'll move on. My guess is you are not even a tennis fan.

Unhinged? That’s funny.

I guess my playing D1 for four years, 2 of which were in the SEC, and playing satellite for a few years should really solidify my lack of tennis knowledge.

That's great - playing any sport at a high D1 level is no joke. Glad all that competitive juice you got to experience has turned you into a fierce message board adversary :)

Seriously though - we can all complain about rules, but when they are known in advance, then enforced, it's hard to take the rulebreaker's side. I'm a big Novak fan, and he handled this on the back end with more class than most would have. I still think he handled it poorly on the front end.

While it’s obvious there were issues with his visa application, people are failing to recognize he entered the country lawfully and won the initial court case. In the case of the judges ruling he can be deported, they did not determine his actions where merit for said deportation, but merely the immigration minister having the authority to revoke his visa. This was a political decision, not a legal one. The Minister openly said the decision to revoke the visa had more to do with the fear of spreading anti covid vax sentiment than actual visa issues.

Reading the actual decisions by the judges and also reading the Minster’s words, it’s impossible to determine this was anything other than political theatre.

"The court does not consider the merits or wisdom of the decision," the judges said. "The task of the court is to rule upon the lawfulness or legality of the decision."

"Another person in the position of the minister may have not cancelled Mr. Djokovic's visa. The minister did," they added.

That quote clearly demonstrates this was politics and nothing more. This was the court that upheld his deportation btw.

What a weird turn of events. 4 weeks ago Novak was heavily favored to win his 21st major. Instead, he gets booted out of Australia and Nadal gets to 21 first. He will probably be sitting at 22 in a few months. Meanwhile, Djokovic faces a possible 3 year ban from Australia, which is where the majority of his majors have been won. I still think Novak ends up with 25 or so, but his path to undisputed GOAT status has gotten a little more complicated.
