Going into the USM game tonight, would you not have said USM was on a higher level compared to UAB as we are compared to UM? I certainly would have, maybe even more so. That being said, any of you who think there is no way we lose to UM are kidding yourselves. And I've heard it from a number of folks here. The USM/UAB debacle is proof positive that nothing is a sure thing and any comments on which team we could play in this bowl or that bowl are completely premature. Because NO bowl is assured at this point. You could argue that UAB was playing at home on senior night, but did you see that crowd?? Come on, they had no advantage there and they just are not good, but somehow they pulled it off. Tonight was a valuable lesson to many teams going into the final weeks of the season. Don't count your chickens.

Southern Miss has shown lack of focus for the last three years with back-to-back-to-jack losses to UAB. You have to maintain focus to beat the teams you're supposed to beat. There's no question that Southern was the more talented of the two teams that played tonight. However, if you look at Mullen's track record, there are no losses to lesser opponents. Dan's teams may not look pretty, they may even stink statistically, but if they do one thing well it's beating the teams that they're supposed to beat. So, USM's loss is hilarious. I love it. I relish in it. But I do not look at it as a harbinger for the Egg bowl.

Even back in the early '80's, when they had those great Bobby Collins teams, they'd screw up the end of the season. 1981- they beat State, tie Alabama, and are in line for a very good bowl. lo and behold, they lose to Louisville (then a horrid team). In 1982, they beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa (the first time since 1963 or something like that), crank out bumper stickers that said, "I was there when we retired the Bear", and then lose to LA Tech 13-6 the next weekend.<div>
</div><div>Any of you hear about the 1970 game where they beat a then-relevant Ole Miss 30-14? State beat USM the next week 52-16 or something like that.</div><div>
</div><div>The good news for USM is that they may have secured Larry Fedora's services for another year.</div>
