outside of the normal pre-halftime bed shitting, collins did an overall OUTSTANDING job. even on that norwood td, redmond had norwood covered like a blanket but a perfect pass can always overcome great coverage...and on the long runs, the box was stacked, so no complaints there whatsoever...thats just a player execution issue...hell, even whitley was in the right position to give some safety help on that deflected attempted td pass. i saw creative and timely blitzing, i saw players knowing where to be and what to do, i saw effort throughout, i saw tight coverage. honestly, thats about as good as this group can play...which on a better night offensively, might have been a win.

if you were looking for some negativity, its not here. i thought we did great. if we can play like that and collins can perform at that level at a consistent level, im a happy man. the defense turned a corner, and if they can keep it up, ive got no other option than to stfu, BUT i will be waiting and watching. i hope this effort by collins and the defense continues. i will be a happy man at seasons end and that will be some delicious crow i will have to eat, but we aint there yet, but if there is going to be an "ah ha!" moment for collins, tonight was it.

'night yall. ill catch yall tomorrow for some excellent shamoan-loving posts that are sure to come. we arent there yet, but i now have some faith that collins might be able to turn this defense around.

C34 would not approve of this post. Too willing to say you may be wrong. He definitely won't tweet about it either**

Props to you for eating a little crow. The biggest problem with our defense is Autry and Whitley, although they both had their moments tonight. Autry still looks really lazy on multiple plays, and its usually the ones where we get burned on a long run towards his side to cut the corner. Whitley still takes bad angles but looked great on that end zone pass breakup.

That last Calhoun interception was pure man. Good grief, I'm so glad to see that kind of fire out of our defensive secondary. He freakin manned up and absolutely fought the receiver and came away with it. That kind of effort makes plays like that go your way.

Best defensive performance all year. They were well prepared for one of the best offenses in the country and it showed. 350 total yards and 20 points... less than half their AVERAGE. Unreal.

Now the offense and FG unit... could have done better... but that's for a different thread.

We've played

good, or good enough to win, defense all year (mostly). It's been our offense that has lost us game by not scoring and by putting our defense is holes (time after time after time).

you really had no choice

Once espn showed the stat that MSU D is second only to bama in forcing opponents 3 and out you would have to be the second coming of c34 to keep it up...

I loved seeing Townsend on the field with the D getting them hype and coaching hard.

We played some 17 defense and if it werent for that 17 place kicker we might have 17 scored and
not let 17 Bama 17 score right before the 17 half, The score towards the end of the 17 game would have 17 been 17-17 !

17 , I am so pissed ! Cant 17 kick a 17 field17goal!

As a state fan I have to wonder does this mean somebody will now hire Geoff Collins.

ive said from the beginning that i hope i am wrong. contrary to popular belief, im a reasonable person. this and the troy game are the two games out of the 10 i think collins did well in, save maybe alcorn which doesnt really tell us anything. i have had serious concerns throughout, but i am no longer at defcon 2...more like defcon 4 now...maybe even a little better than that. all that said, that defense earned the respect of the bama players. you saw it as time was ticking down and the bama offense exchanged bro grabs:

as time was expiring. we definitely had the respect of the bama offense. that was very clear. that was about as good as you can play vs that offense. clearly we havent been playing at that level for most of the season, but if we can build on what happened last night and clean up the last 2 minutes of each half, i can be a collins supporter. if we go back to what happened vs bowling green and kentucky, im right back where i was, but for now, collins has earned a week of silence from me, and if we keep it up, ill be more than happy to pipe down. im gonna be all over his *** if we blow it vs arky, not because i want to be a dick, but because i want better, and now, we all KNOW we can do better. if we can do it vs bama, we can do it against anybody. in an effort to avoid a firestorm that would surely ensue, i will look prospectively on this and not retrospectively. we took a huge step yesterday, but im now expecting a performance like that vs arkansas and ole miss. he has a chance to win me over and heaven knows we are going to need a similar effort for a chance to go bowling.

Well, there's a lot more to defense than just forcing 3 and outs....

Our defense gets a lot of 3 and outs, but if they don't go 3 and out they typically give up a score. We are ranked 75th in red zone defense, which is actually a lot higher than I thought it would be. In the South Carolina game, every one of their drives was either a 3 and out, or a score. Their first FG was actually a 3 and out, since they got the ball after an interception, lost 2 yards, and then kicked. They scored 34 points, which I don't consider a great defensive day.

That said, though, the defense played great last night, and I was quite surprised. The DBs really seem to be coming around. I'm still not convinced Calhoun got a foot down on that first interception, though.
