Now that's how you sing the national anthem.

I missed it? I seem to remember it was going to be Carrie Underwood and somebody ... can't remember who else.

...It should be sung with reverence and care exactly like Francis Scott Key wrote it. The person who sings it should be as respectful as the people are who put their hands over their hearts or stand at attention and salute it. I don't like seeing professional singers trying to one up each other with jazz renditions, country renditions, hip hop renditions, screams, or changes. They can do that with "I'm Proud to be an American," by Lee Greenwood, but not with our National Anthem!

FSK didn't write The Star Spangled Banner as a song, he wrote it as a poem (called Defense of Fort McHenry). The music put to the poem was an English drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven". Just sayin'.

But it became our national song and I totally agree with Backer. I can't stand it when it's jazzed up, even a little. And Kelly Clarkson did indeed do that ... certainly not as bad as a lot of "singers" but she did it enough to raise my ire. It's a very difficult song to sing, or so I'm told (I can't sing a note). The best I've heard sing it are sopranos who are not on the country or pop charts.<div>
</div><div>I didn't think Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton did a good job either, and I like Miranda's regular music OK. When singers get out of their elements, it just doesn't sound right.</div><div>
</div><div>If you went to the Music City Bowl, the girl who did it there (she was in the Army) did it really well although she's not a super top-notch singer.</div>

America, the Beautiful. Just like that song better and it is much easier to sing. The melody is easier for most folks to follow....sort of like a church hymn.

The anthem is supposed to be a solemn, reverant, distinguished display (smushed in between commercials with talking babies and chimpanzees, right before 11 men try to tackle somebody with a ball). Show some respect!!

sound like folks that think its sacrilegious to sing anything in church that wasn't in the original 1900 hymnal. Kelly Clarkson has a voice matched by few others around and she did a beautiful job with the National Anthem. Personally I just wish she would have done the halftime show rather than Madonna.

some years back but went nowhere. Apparantly not enough wanted it changed...references to God had nothing to do with it. We have "in God we trust" on our money.

I think it was some opera singer, or maybe just a guy that sang with an opera style voice. He tried to take the last note of the National Anthem up and cracked the ever loving mess out of it. It was really well done until that last note, and that last note ruined the entire thing. It was so bad, and I will probably never forget that.

To me, it's:

1. Star Spangled Banner (instrumental)
2. America, the Beautiful (sung)
3. Star spangled Banner (sung)
4. America, the Beautiful (instrumental)

Basically, America, the Beautiful is a much better song sung, but in situations where the national anthem is done instrumentally (olympics, by marching bands) you can't beat what we've got now.

Also, I'm not religious, but I don't mind a brief generic god. It's true to the spirit of the song. If you want to start promoting "Jesus Loves the Little Children" as the new anthem, then we can have another talk.
