As the Twitter followers among you learned this morning, Starkville sprinter Tavaris Tate will sign with Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. Friday, at the SHS library. He's the nation's fastest schoolboy sprinter in the 200 and 400 meters, with times this year of 20.89 and 45.78, respectively.
He's also pretty good in the 100 and will try to win Class 5A state titles in all three events on May 9. Nobody's ever done that in 5A.
Tate chose MSU over several other schools, including Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M. "There's other schools he loves, too, but I think it was him being a Bulldog by birth had something to do with it," his coach, Cleveland Hudson, told me this afternoon. There are other factors, too, like the facility upgrade MSU is getting, and former teammate Antoine Lipscomb, a jumper and hurdler, will be a teammate once again.
Hudson said Tate likes the direction MSU track and field is headed. "MSU's got some upcoming stars, too. With him added in there, when you're building your program, the more talent you have, the better you're going to be," Hudson said.
Starkville's been strong in the sprints in recent years, but how does Tate compare to past athletes Hudson has coached? "He's special in his own way. He's real dedicated, and he's real humble. He's a team player. I won't say anything about he was greater than the other guys, that'll speak for itself."
