Things sure have changed since I went to school there in '96. We used to be competitive every year.

So many of those who hang out in the pasture and true sports devotees, just casual bystanders that picks bits and pieces</p>

We hired Morris Watts instead. Lee turned it down because he knew the Kang was at the end of his run at MSU, and decided to stick around Gulf Coast CC, only to end up back at SHS. Same reason Tyrone Nix told the Kang no in the same year....

Bill Lee is a great man and coach, played on the '01 state championship team for him and still follow SHS football. With that being said, the talent level besides for Tillery this year and the past couple of years has been horrific in Starkville to say the least. His offense is not hard at all to pick up and understand, but for some reason the kids they have right now, especially at QB, couldn't light a fire with gasoline. I mean back when I played and throughout the 90s, Starkville would have 2 to 3 guys a year that went D-1 and about 4 or 5 more that could've if the had gotten there **** together. Now, they're just lucky to have maybe 1 in the last 6 years.

coach lee was offered the wr coach position not the OC and turned it down because he was told he would not have final say on who played and didnt play. starkvilles talent level is decreasing because the kids are being babied at the junior high level and quitting when the hard work begins. drop out rates are up in starkville, and there doesnt seem to be any more linemen in starkville. we have to fix it at the younger ages to get it going at the high school again, and i think we will. it is a sad thing that is happening, when i was there and involved with the track program helping coach just as recently as a couple of years ago, i saw students that were talented enough to make a difference not playing any sports, i know this happens at every school, but there were more than the usual and this part of the problem wont get any better until some discipline gets instilled in those kids. starkville suffered under a criminal as a principal and it hurt all aspects of the school including athletics. we may never be what we were, but we will be competitive again whether its under lee or someone else with a good upstart youth football program thats getting the kids involved and a getting them a taste of the work it takes.

The issues within the Starkville School District are plenty, and without a doubt it's carried over into the athletic programs. Still no excuse for getting beat 30-0, but the problems within the SSD need to be addressed soon.

The thing with this year's squad is lack of depth. Yes, they have some young talent that outta produce in the next few years, but the veterans on this year's team aren't much on quality or quantity. The quarterback is actually a heck of an athlete (Freddie Milons's nephew) and I think he'll put up good numbers when it's all said and done this year. But Tillery is the best player on the team, and he's out for several weeks with a broken bone in his foot suffered during preseason practice.

As for Coach Lee, I have nothing but respect for him as a person. He's a good man and playing under him in 2001 was one of the best experiences of my life, but from what I can tell, his passion hasn't been the same since he returned from the junior college ranks. Some could argue that anyone could've won with the team we had in 2001, but his energy was contagious that season and he worked his *** off getting us prepared. That being said, it's almost as if his effort has declined a little bit each year since he's been back. He isn't as involved with the team as he once was, and as a result, football enthusiasm has suffered.

You also have to take into account that Greg Carter's basketball program is clicking on all cylinders. SHS Football has about 50 kids on the roster right now. About 100 students tried out for basketball. A lot of that interest is a result of Carter's efforts to put a quality product on the court, but it also has much to do with the surging success of Starkville product Travis Outlaw.

Needless to say, the football program needs a kick in the balls. I don't know if Lee has enough left in the tank to turn things around on his own accord, but I hope he does. If not, Rob Morgan deserves next crack at the job. All indications suggest Coach Morgan is ready to be a head coach and is well-liked by the entire staff and team.
