Since the Stans sheep praise his winning records so much, I thought it would be nice to see what kind of teams he was actually beating. Here are his yearly records and his average RPI win and loss for each season.

2010-2011
17-14 (9-8)
Avg. RPI W = 174
Avg. RPI L = 93

2009-2010
23-11 (11-8)
W = 158
L = 81

2008-2009 NCAA 1st Round
22-12 (13-7)
W = 135
L = 86

2007-2008 NCAA 2nd Round
23-11 (13-5)
W = 147
L = 37

06-07
18-13 (9-9)
W = 135
L = 54

05-06
15-15 (5-12)
W = 145
L = 65

04-05 NCAA 2nd Round
23-11 (10-8)
W = 164
L = 53

03-04 NCAA 2nd Round
26-4 (14-3)
W = 91
L = 18

02-03 NCAA 1st Round
21-10 (11-8)
W = 111
L = 40

01-02 NCAA 2nd Round
27-8 (13-6)
W = 107
L = 29

00-01
18-13 (7-9)
W = 114
L = 40

99-00
13-17 (5-12)
W = 196
L = 62

Didn't have data for 98-99 but our record was 20-13 and we missed the tournament because of a high RPI so you do the math on that one.

Also of note, Stans has never beaten a higher-ranked RPI team in the NCAA tournament.

All that points to is SOS and the lack of it in OOC play. If you beat 2-3 RPI 250-300ish teams, it is going to be quite hard to get that number back below 100.

One telling thing is the average RPI on his losses. Those have been quite high in recent years.

A few 300 RPI teams will skew that analysis to make it look like the teams we beat were worse than they really were (and also hurts our RPI more than smart scheduling would). A better comparison would be our record against top 50 and top 100 RPI each year, or the median RPI of our wins and losses each year.

But your logic is a bit flawed because most teams are going to have similar numbers just due to the fact that on average most losses will be to good RPI teams and most wins will be against bad RPI teams.

The fact of the matter with Stansbury that pisses me off is not his performance against good teams. It is his tendency to lose to **** teams.

Not really, most other "successful" teams were around the same mark as our 01-02 thru 03-04 teams and for comparison, Billy Gillispie was fired after 2 years at Kentucky with an overall record of 40-27 (20-12) and an average win of 161 and loss of 55.

And you can add to it his winning percentage of 12% when facing teams of a higher RPI

Could you imagine if 75 % of the teams on Stans schedule were NCAA tournament teams cause that's basically what Mullen has to go up against.

Can be played different ways I see what you are getting at Stans plays cream puff teams so his wins show that .By the way it is W-152 and L-53 so far this year SEC we are W-71 L-61 .But you can play numbers like this all day long to get what you want . In 11 seasons his SEC record is 120 -99 the last Mississippi state coach to have a winning record is Ron Greene for one season in79 before that is the Babe. Go figure

This is what people who support Stansbury are missing. We consistently lose to teams that are not good and are worse than us. Mullen has not yet lost to a team that didn't finish their season over .500. Stansbury has, and he's done it a number of times. Mullen beats the SEC teams he'sexpected to beat. You can argue Auburn this year, but they still had a ton of talent on that team. There is no question in basketballwe are more talented than UGA, LSU, and Arkansas, and all 3 of them made us look awful. You ever seen a Mullen team look awful against an SEC team we were better than? Not that I can remember. But our basketball team consistently goes out against teams we are better then and look terrible.

We consistently lose to teams that are not good and are worse than us.

This is one of the flaws of comparing a 12 game season in football to a 30+ game season in basketball. You are going to lose games occasionally to teams you are "better" than in basketball (baseball too). I won't argue it doesn't happen too often, because it does, but the reality is that it happens to other good teams too.

Mullen beats the SEC teams he'sexpected to beat.

Yes. Both of them.

Of course the flip side is that he never beats a team he wasn't expected to. At least Stans does that occasionally.

people get pissed when we lose to inferior teams b/c it screws up our tourney chances/seed.

If we dont' make it this year, it will A) be the worst coaching job in SEC history and most importantly b) it will give stans 1 tournament worthy season in the last 7. Hell, Stan Heath could do that and he is terrible.

Hopefully the formatting doesn't screw up...

(I only list stats from 2005 to the present.)

This is for all games in that time:

That's WAY too many losses to 100+ RPI teams. And the top 25 record is terrible, evenagainst the top 25 teams. I could live with that a lot better if we were taking care of business against teams outside the top 50 though.
