So this is the year that the Superbowl is being played outside in New York. What do you think about that? I personally think it is stupid. I don't like the idea of the weather affecting the game in the Superbowl. Isn't it suppose to be a reward to play in nice weather or a dome when you make it there? Thoughts?

the players couldn't give a flying 17 at a rolling donut about where the SB is played. They just wanna play in it and win. Winning is the reward, not just playing in it..

However, It absolutely sucks for the fans to be outsice in NYC in late jan or early feb.

I think some of the players do care.

Also, it puts a team like Houston or New Orleans at a disadvantage. I cant believe so many people are for it. Next thing you know the game will be in London.

I'm more concerned about security for fans and players than the weather. Seems like a Super Bowl in New York would be the prime time for terrorists. I can't imagine the level of security for this game.

I think it's great. Put the biggest game on the biggest stage where it belongs. None of this ***** dome ****. Get out and play in the elements like God intended the game to be played. I used to freaking LOVE the Vikings back when I was a kid and they played on the frozen tundra.

I agree

The game is played in cold weather during the regular season. There is no reason the Super Bowl shouldn't be played in cold weather at times

I hate it.

I almost hope the game is delayed by a blizzard (could easily happen) so they'll realize it was a dumb idea to begin with and never do it again. Keep this in mind - snow was a huge obstacle in 2011 in DALLAS. NY could be a disaster. If you want to host the Superbowl in the north, build a dome.

The difference being NYC knows how to handle snow. Now a blizzard is another story.

Yes - there will always be snow - but blizzards can/do happen that time of year.

That same 2011 that Dallas got blanketed, NYC was hit with a horrible blizzard - within a week of the Superbowl.

Weather affects the game when its played in a dome. Weather affects the game when its only ever played in warm climates.

Part of NFL games is adjusting to elements. If its outside, you adjust to the wind/rain/snow/cold/heat. If its inside, you adjust to the turf and lack of weather. You have totally different game plans, depending on where you play. So yeah, playing in a dome or in only good weather affects how teams approach the game.

Why is it OK for weather to affect all the games leading up to the Super Bowl, but not the Super Bowl itself?

I think its great to see weather potentially affect how teams play since they play in all sorts of weather leading of to the Super Bowl.

It puts those 2 teams at a disadvantage? Ok, but never playing in an outdoor northern climate puts Green Bay, Chicago, Denver, Cleveland, Cincy, Baltimore, Pitt, New England, NYG, and NYJ all at a disadvantage since none of them can play in what they are 'used to'.
Its a weak argument both ways, fyi, since teams play all over the country in all sorts of weather every year.

The last super bowl in ATL.......

There was a major ice storm that hit the area that weekend. Sporadic power outages, hazardous roads, everthing covered in ice. Never can tell.

The biggest havoc the weather plays is not the game but the festivities leading up to it that bring in $$. The superbowl is an extravaganza that is so much more than the game. It is the only major US professional sports championship that is not played at one of the participant's home stadium. The reason so many SB are played in NO, south fla and southern California is because these places are vacation destination areas.

i'd bet NYC area is more prepared to deal with the security than somewhere like tampa or phoenix or nola. also, the super bowl is such a huge event, it doesn't matter the location if a terroristy wanted to target it.

silverdome never hosted the super bowl. ford field did, and from what i remember, everything went fine. it was in a dome, but i don't think there was a blizzard that disrupted everything.

Wrong. Super Bowl XVI (Niners v Bengals) was at the Silverdome. First Stupor Bowl I watched.

You're incorrect. Super Bowl XVI was held at the Silverdome.

The Super Bowl isn't a "reward"... the Pro Bowl in Hawaii is, which is why everyone is pissed they're moving it. It was pointless but the players got a family vacation out of it and it has a better TV audience than any other all-star game in any sport (hard to believe, but it's true).

The Super Bowl is for the fans more than anyone, and I think it's going to suck for a lot of people... myself included. I'm going. But hail, sleet, or snow couldn't keep me from going or watching every second.

I've heard there won't be an on-sight halftime show though because logistics don't work.

To date the coldest Super Bowl was held in New Orleans at Tulane Stadium and it was like 20 something degrees. The reason the Super Bowl is always in warmer cities is because they have the potential to draw more "tourists" who want to go to the Super Bowl and get to say "thank God, it's warm there and it's freezing where I live!"... but New York even with the cold should have almost the same draw of tourist appeal. That's why it won't ever be in Minnesota even though they have a dome. No one would go to a Minnesota Super Bowl.

Do you mean in minnesota again? redskins/bills was in minnesota in 92.
Sure. Moving forward, I guess. I wouldn't say '92 NFL is anything like the business of '13/'14 NFL though.

As a football fan I'd love for the SB to be held in Seattle. That dome is sick and their fans are ridiculous. That town loves sports, regardless of what it actually is. Just goes back to their model though... is Seattle a big enough tourist attraction? I think it has more than Phoenix but Phoenix is an oasis in February compared to Seattle.
This is the best news out of all of this. Now I don't have to change the channel during halftime.
Whoa... I didn't say there wouldn't be a halftime show. From everything I read they said they don't see a way to set up a stage and do their extravagant whatever's that are the exact opposite of something football fans actually would want to watch in an outdoor stadium in February. That means it'll probably be in MSG streamed over your television set or something. Good for the people at MetLife, worse for the watchers at home.
