I'm not worried about Tampa / standings. Just keep winning and all of that will sort itself out in the long run. Set a target of 100 wins and chase it all season.

One of the quirky things that always pops up in baseball is the Yankees have only lost 2 games in the past 10 days and both were to former Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. He deals on the Yankees but not on anyone else.

After firing seven scoreless innings in a win over them last Wednesday at Globe Life Field, Eovaldi continued his mastery of his former club, improving to 5-2 with a 2.22 ERA in his last 11 starts against the Bombers.

And it seems Tampa never loses a game. Despite the tear the Yankees have been on so has Tampa. They are only 1/2 game back.
I'm sure you remember Frank Lary. Eovaldi has nothing on him .Lary was the first pitcher in 50 years to beat the Yankees 7 times in a row and was 21-7 for his career. He was solid but just a .500 pitcher. Used to drive me crazy.

This bullpen. Crap assembled by Cashman. Doval is Williams 2.0. Cruz is a joke. Why does Boone keep going to him in key points in games? How many times does he have to blow the inning before he is not used? Boone is so hard headed and a fool. It's a shame another gem by Schlittler goes to waste by Boone's stupid pitching moves. Some may say, well, the Yankees pen has the second best ERA in MLB, and that is true, but that does not tell how many inherited runs were allowed. And the key here is those numbers were assembled in games where the Yankees had big leads and there was no pressure on the relievers. In games that were on the line the Yankees pen has been one of the worst in baseball.

Lot of talking heads saying that the Yanks need to upgrade the bullpen.

Next lesson from Cole to Cam is to get a little deeper / economy of pitches so the pen has less of a chance to blow another gem

This freaking bullpen SUCKS! Another blown game by the pen. How Cashman and Hal thought this pen was legit while every Yankees fan knew better is mind blowing.

The Yanks are really good and can be great. It's already time to set aside "development" and go for the gusto this year.

Move Weathers to the pen. Lefty throwing high 90s cheese will be welcome.

Have Gil, Rodriguez, and LaGrange down at Triple A start pen work focused on their heater and one off-speed pitch. Three righties throwing from 97 to 103 coming out of the pen will be welcome.

Leave Hill and Bednar. Let Yarborough be your blow-out long man / emergency spot starter. Leave a couple others for low leverage innings. Throw the rest in the garbage can.

Do it NOW.

That's what I would like to see as well, but the Yankees are just not going to bring up those 2 youngsters to put them in the pen, but that i where they need to be. Yankees want them getting more work than they would get in NY and it makes sense. Maybe bring them up later in the year. as we have discussed many time, Gil needs to be in the pen. Period.

I can't stand Aaron ******* Boone. Weathers pitching a 1 hit shutout. Lost his no hitter and then walked a man. Here comes Boone out of the dugout chomping on his gum. Pulls Weathers. I'm fussing at Boone to let Weathers win or lose this on his own. He deserved it. 2 pitches later our wonderful bullpen gives up a 3 run Homer. 2 inherited runners score plus one more and instead of headed for a probable 2-0 win the Yankees will probably lose. I got so mad so I changed the channel. I'll see the result later. I'm so sick of Boone.

Yankees lose another game because of an inexplicable move by Boone. I've said for years if the Yankees win it will be in spite of Boone.

The bullpen….the bullpen….the bullpen

And yes, Boone should have let Weathers try to work out of the jam

But sweet Jesus…the bullpen. Solely responsible for the vast majority of Yankee losses so far this year

Boone still pulls the trigger though. He was signaling to the pen as soon as he came out of the dugout. I felt after what Weathers had done so far he could have talked to him a few minutes then let him have another batter. I'm sick of this 100 pitch count BS. I feel so bad for Weathers. Went from a no hitter to a no decision in the blink of an eye.

Doesn't do a lot of good to win 9 in a row then lose 5 of the next 6. Second time this year the Yankees have gone on a long winning streak then a bad losing streak followed. Mind boggling how the offense just dies all of a sudden. Everyone at the same time. Meanwhile the Rays have been on a tear and are now 2 games up on the Yankees.

Volpe recalled today. Will start at SS tonight. Caballero to the IL. How crazy is that?
I read yesterday that Cab led all SS in defensive runs saved and was 3rd overall in the game. Volpe needs to come up understanding / focused on his glove comes 1st, his legs 2nd, contact 3rd.....and nothing else.

That defense by the Yankees infield in the bottom of the 3rd was comical. Even O's announcers said what in the world are they doing? Good thing Warren got out of a bases loaded no out jam caused by defensive lapses I've never seen at any level of baseball.

Boone continues his stupidity. Yankees runner called out but is actually safe. Boone decides not to challenge. O's announcers are as dumbfounded as me. Judge singles and it would have scored a run.

Since I am having dental surgery in the morning I figured I would kick back and rest and watch the Yankees. Not much rest. After watching Fried give up 3 runs in 3 innings and looking uncomfortable he exited with elbow soreness. Uh, oh! He hasn't looked good in a month. He's off for a MRI. We get Rodon back and lose Fried. We get Volpe back and lose Caballero. That's been the Yankees luck the past several years.

So with the Yankees going to the pen in the 4th inning I knew we had no chance. Blackburn was immediately pounded. I spent the rest of the game doing some yard work. The Yankees are going to the playoffs and might win the division. But no way in hell they win a WS with this pen.

The Yankees got 1 measly hit. It's crazy how all the bats go silent at the same time. Lost 5 of 6 now after ripping teams for 2 weeks. They get hot at the same time and cold at the same time. Can't we go half and half like the Rays and Cubs? Lol

"And the Indians finish the day with one hit....wait, one hit? One G-- D--- Hit?!?!?"

Color guy: "you can't say GD on the radio"

Harry: "oh, who gives a shi*....nobody is listening anyway"

Yankees really need to get a reliable closer. Bednar is not it. Has he even had a 123 inning this year? Can't even relax in a sure won game when he enters.

Cam absolutely dominant yet again

I have a ton of baseball history stored in my brain and I am struggling to remember a young starter who is being so dominant while basically just throwing 3 variations of a fastball (sinker, cutter, 4-seamer). It’s to the point where the batter knows 98 mph is coming and he just has to guess in his swing whether the ball is gonna drop, cut outside, or run inside. It’s pretty amazing to watch

Yeah. It's Mo Riveraesque. Lol

Racking my brain for pitchers you wonder about. Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, and Dizzy Dean come to mind but they all threw just 2 pitches. Mark Fydrich had some weird pitch that he threw all the time and said he never knew what it was going to do. Fernandez Valenzuela had just 2 pitches. Fastball and screwball.

I know you said just one pitch but a fastball, cutter, and sinker are three pitches in my mind because they are gripped differently, but I understand what you are saying and it is very unique. A variation of one fast pitch.

Just to stray past one pitch but Bert Blyleven had a killer curveball as did Denny McLain, the last 30 game winner.

Did Nolan Ryan throw anything other than a fastball? It had many variations. Right down the middle 110 mph. Right at your head. Behind you. Over your head to the backstop. Lmao Glad I never had to face him but I faced a 100 mph thrower who hit me in the kidney and I passed out. Damn it hurt for months.

I was going to come back to specifically ask you as youve forgotten more baseball than all the rest of us know combined lol

But I have to say….how in the world could you forget Nolan’s Uncle Charlie curve ball. That thing would break (SNAP) two feet. He would start it at a batter’s head and they were diving out of the box while the ball ended up dead in the heart of the plate

And yes, a cutter, 4-seamer, and sinker are different pitches with different grips. But they all come out of the same arm slot and with Cam they are all coming 97-101 and are all fastball derivatives. And he’s throwing them nearly 90% of the time. I just can’t remember a successful starter with effectively no change of speed pitch. And he’s not successful….he is dominant. It’s been a year now and no one is figuring him out. He’s only getting better. And that’s amazing when you really think about it

Nolan pitch selection

Strike 1 and 2: here it is, Ryan Express middle middle hit it if you can

Pitch 3: Ryan Express 1 inch under the batter’s chin

Strike 3: Uncle Charlie started at the head and batter diving to the dugout

LOL

The most irritating thing in the loss last night is Weaver and Williams have been terrible all season and last night they go lights out on us. Weaver getting out of a bases loaded no out jam was crazy. Yankees should be embarrassed.

I know I sound like a broken record but the Yankees bullpen is **** and Bednar is a joke of a closer. Boone can't keep trotting his no pitching *** out there to close games. His ERA is over 5.00! His stuff is weak. No electric stuff at all. Can't believe the Yankees gave this chump money to close games. Oh, yes, I can. Cashman and Hal are idiots. My wife watches games with me and I swear she could put together a better bullpen. Toronto is going to destroy the Yankees the next 4 nights.
