I knew radio has gotten really corporate but I did not realize how bad it was until my ride back from V'burg to the Breeze. The Hattiesburg station was fading out so we switched to TK101, and I noticed they played the last two songs they played in H'burg. I went back to the H'burg station to confirm my fears and sure enough they had the exact same playlist. It's just sad. For the record the playlist was ACDC shoot to kill, Smashing Pumpkings Tonight Tonight, Five Finger Death Punch song with Pilot speaking, Volbeat Cheater, then I hate this band My Darkest Days Porn star Dancing.

I second. It's bad that's why I got satellite. What's sad is that's a better rock collection than the supposed Memphis rock station.

I took mass media at MSU, and he would rail on radio today. He talked about how corrupt the process for getting your song on the radio is today. I don't remember the specifics, but he said the people who decide what gets played on the radio, remember the air is public property so the Gov't has to approve, were basically the people running the recording/media companies. He also pointed out how every 'classic rock' (insert any genre) radio station played the same as the others.

I believe there are some rebates involved for stations to play certain Label's music. Those are all you hear on the radio.

I think you posted the reddit thread about those in the business that spilled the beans. One of my favorites was a DJ that said in the request hour, the DJ would play his music and claim it was a request just so he could play his music.

i don't know that i mind that two different stations in two different markets have the same playlist. satellite is exactly that.... except it is one station with one playlist. yes, all the genres, all the talk, etc. we drove from texas up to the liberty bowl.... and back. 6 days seperated the up and back trip. quite a few comedy/talk/etc. were replayed daily.

Satellite is the shittiest audio quality that can be received in an automobile radio. I have Sirius, which is worse than XM, but XM sucks too. There is no dynamic range. The mid and high tones are warbly. Talk radio and news channels sound like voices coming out of a tin can. Painful to listen to.

Uh pretty sure XM and Siruis are one in the same now hence the name Sirius XM http://www.siriusxm.com/. And you must have some crusty *** old speakers in your clunker if you think satellite radio has terrible sound quality.

Sat has a lot to do with how it's hooked up. I don't know the details but if your using an fm setting it sounds horrible but mine sounds crystal clear better than fm.

Sirius and XM have combined to one company, but Sirius and XM are still separate technologies. There are Sirius satellites and Sirius receivers and then there are XM satellites with XM receivers - all from the same "SiriusXM" company.

My crusty *** sound system is a $3,000 JBL & Rockford Fosgate system that I installed myself. Thanks.

Your thinking is backwards. The shittier the sound system (like say a factory system), the less it is capable of articulating flaws in the source material.

I will agree with you on that. Talk radio on satellite is horrible. You can barely hear them.

I really miss being a DJ in those days. When folks ask why I don't do it any longer I tell them to just listen to what you have on the air now. The only room for personality is on talk shows and they bore the **** out of me. I would rather listen to my CDs or iPhone list.

Hey hey don't get your panties in a bunch. Good choice of equipment to beat your chest over. After reading a little it appears Sirius is the crappier of the two. I will say whichever one the Sony system in my F150 connects to is pretty crystal clear even at high volumes. I do notice that the streaming radio stations from New York and LA that play on channels 11 and 12 sound like crappy FM radio though. Satellite radio even sounds better than streaming Pandora paid subscription through the USB connection over 4G. OTA radio is pretty much garbage in both sound quality and content and I don't think I've listened to it over a year. Willing to bet OTA radio won't be around too much longer with all the other great options available. I say in 10 years it is gone completely if not sooner.

XM technology is vastly superior to what Sirius had/has. XM programmers can move bandwidth between channels so the more popular channels have better sound quality than less popular ones. They can also change/add/delete channels at will. Sirius technology can do none of that. They cannot move bandwidth so all sound the same, they can't edit without just completely shutting down a channel.
