He is 0-5 in the 3rd game of the season.

2021: Lost to UGA
2022: Lost to UGA
2023: Lost to UGA
2024: Lost to LSU (Should have been a win; one of the few times I'll concede we were actually screwed by the refs.)
2025: Lost to Vandy

Well, in Beamer's defense all 5 of those teams were pretty freaking good. At the time we played them, the 5 teams had an average ranking of about 9.2. By the end of those seasons, the 5 teams had an average ranking of . . . 9.2. If you exclude the LSU game in which you concede we were screwed, the other four opponents averaged a #5 ranking. Two out of the 5 were national champions and 3 of the five finished in the top 3. Notwithstanding the possibility that MSU might be the surprise playoff team of 2026, I think the opponent for this third game of the season is a step down from the previous 5.

Interesting. The first two games of those seasons showed no clear trend:
2021: Eastern Illinois and East Carolina
2022: Ga State and Arkansas (L)
2023: UNC (L) and Furman
2024: Old Dominion and UK
2025: Virginia Tech and SC State

Losing to UGA from '21 to '23 isn't really surprising. Who didn't lose to them then? The LSU loss was a robbery and Vandy had a unicorn season last year. I'm not sure Beamer is doing anything in game three that is causing a problem. It looks like bad timing more than anything.

I'm sure if we worked on it, we could explain away every loss. The only one I'd take away is LSU since we were clearly robbed. The others we just lost to good teams, but we always explain away losses to good teams. At some point we just have to beat good teams.

In an event, regardless of all that, it's still a statistical oddity that Game 3 has been a clunker each season so far.
