I'm glad we won. But sort of agree with you ... up until the end I was wondering why you didn't pass to your big TE Warren more and run #10 more too. Those two really scared me.
Congrats to ND. What a frustrating game to say the least....

So many games were tight right up until the end where you'd sit and think, "Why is this so difficult? We're better than these guys, and yet we're in the dog fight in the 4th quarter
This is true.

Lots of dogfights this year, including the OSU and Oregon games when we were outmatched on talent but fought like hell. Credit where credit due.

Tough to win without a passing game. Even mediocre teams are able to get mediocre WRs open a few times a game.

This is a brutally tough schedule.

The OOC schedule is laughable, but then we open the B1G with Oregon (pencil that as an L), then we have Iowa and Ohio State as back to back road games? Both potential losses.

Then a not-pushover Indiana team.

Then we end with Michigan State, Nebraska, and Rutgers -- all B-tier programs, but you can't sleep on any of them. All three of those teams are capable of engineering upsets.

Next season might be a grim 8-4, and 7-5 or even 6-6 is not out of the question.
10-2 and if we get another gifted bracket, see you in the final 4

As I get ready to head out this morning for scones and lattes for my wife and me, I look at my closet full of Penn State jackets and say, “Why? Why do you do this to yourself?” Of course, I went out dressed like an idiot. Penn State. For f*ck’s sake.

😞
It’s even worse than you can imagine. I licked your scone before you purchased it.

I predicted in 2022 that we would have a successful 2024 season.

Everything favored us this year, way more than anyone could have anticipated.

We had a bunch of seasoned upperclassmen with a ton of big game experience. Our O-line played out of their minds down the stretch. Nick and Fatman both had good seasons. We had a second-year, full-time starter at QB who was a blue chip HS recruit.

And best of all: we had an absolutely marshmallowy schedule.

In spite of this, we lost our only tough game. Again.

Then against all odds, we get handed an invite to the CCG where we lose to another good opponent.

Despite this, we get a red carpet path through the playoff where we get to knock off the two weakest opponents. Then we lose, yet again, to the third decent team we played this season.

So you see the trend?
Yes, we lost to 3 "decent" teams. But we also beat some decent teams. SMU is a decent team. They may arguably be better than Indiana. Boise St. almost knocked of Oregon at Oregon. USC was up and down, but had some nice wins. I agree we had a great opportunity this year and we didn't completely embrace it. But here is where I'm at with the program. We are close. There are some positions we need to recruit better, ala WR and DT. But we are pretty damn close. You couldn't claim that 5 years ago. But this now. And now I believe we are very relevant and part of the conversation. You couldn't say that 5 years ago. Heck, I can even sit down with my Bama and Georgia fans and claim we were better than them this year. So don't be so down on us my friend. We are very good football program on the rise. In some ways our progression is similar to Georgia's. Look at all those disappointing losses that the Dawgs suffered before finally got over the hump. I will say, I am more optimistic about our program, even after last night's loss, than I have been since 2010.

One could argue mental toughness, but the inability of this team to maintain momentum and keep their foot on the gas is maddening. Boise should have been a rout. One unforced error (Allar-Singleton exchange), and we were in a dog fight. That fumble should never have happened, but when it did, it seems that we couldn’t shake it off.

Last night, we were up 10-0 and then couldn’t get out of our own way. Like a light switch, the momentum changed. Even when we got it back leading 24-17, we again could not sustain it.

Maddening.
Like ground dog day…when is enough is enough? Zero accountability.

If Sandy does not offer contract terms that were not earned, this merry-go-round could have ended years ago.

Her gross incompetence has cost dear ole’ State dearly!

Well, the sun is not out here in Georgia....oh wait, there it is behind those dark snow clouds. All joking aside....life goes on and I've placed the game in its proper perspective. Meaning? It was a disappointment for sure, but it wasn't devastating. I'm sure most on this board feel the same way. I'm sure most on this board have felt real disappointment and experienced real devastating life events. Naturally everyone's perspective is different. Everyone's life's experiences are different. But I'm sure most of us here will place this game in its proper perspective. If not now....over time. Good day my friends.
Good perspective.

Not devastated.

Result was very predictable. It does not take a genius…just look at past results.

LB99: There’s another angle that you’re not taking into consideration. Forget about stats, records or championships for a moment. The culture was different in the 70’s, 80’s and even the 90’s. Get some old practice footage of Coach Joe Paterno, Barry Switzer, Bear Bryant or even Jimmy Johnson. These guys did not mess around, when they told a player to do something they did not ask a second time. You were nothing more than a part of a machine that was put together to beat another machine.

That is not the case anymore, coaches today are forced to coddle, hug and be respectful & nice (or else they’ll be threatened with the transfer PORTAL!!). That’s the BS coach Franklin deals with every year, that brotherly love BS is really a head coach who walks on broken eggshells and finds himself navigating that middle ground with 90 different personalities. Here’s my proof that coach Franklin is handcuffed. A few games back coach Franklin (appropriately) ripped into Allar on the sideline after he made a ridiculous read and turned the ball over. Allar walked away and had a fit, screamed at a player and slammed his helmet. What did Franklin do, he immediately runs over to Allar and basically kissed Allar’s butt until all was ok. Tough to get 110% out of your players with this methodology.
All true.

Yet other coaches are able to win a game.

Exhibit A: Marcus Freeman. He faces same issues as Franklin. Yet he managed to win a game with a really banged up team.

because we couldn’t take the top off the ND D, Allar basically faced a “red zone” defensive look on every snap. ND was able to cheat up and never pay for the cheat. I’m surprised we ran the ball as well as we did.
I give the year an A for fun, highlighted with our USC weekend.
Next year we go 10-2 and I’ll be looking for free grub O weekend:)
Cheers Boys. CTR

I will meet you half way…Alabama was a bigger game as you know, same for Ok, Michigan all won the Natty those years. In 99’ Joe and staff lost the team after that Minnesota debacle as you know. Iowa 08’ yes, and a couple of others we could come up with…but you need to agree this ND team was not any of those teams, and we had great team momentum vs. the 99’ Squad.

This game was easily winnable and it slipped away.

Now, I just watched the post game presser, I am not sure Allar has grown as he more than once stated. I would have said, “I forced the ball, it was a bad read and this loss is on me.” Not sure Franklin will have this convo with his QB and his parents will say “ You didn’t have any receivers honey.” Point here is that winning these type of games does have something to do with coaching and the teams culture of mental tuffness which starts from the top.
No. Not at all. This is where part of our fanbase becomes delusional with moving goalposts. Not all of those Michigan teams win the Natty. The 99 Michigan team finished 10-2 and ranked 5th. PSU suffered their first loss the previous week to Minnesota at home, but they were still in the thick of things if they won out. They collapsed, at home, the following week against Michigan. The 2005 Michigan team finished 7-5. Both games were winnable and PSU couldn’t close the deal. The 1997 PSU/Michigan game was an embarrassment. PSU was ranked #2 going into that game and Michigan was #4. Michigan came into Beaver Stadium and steamrolled PSU 34-8. It was a curb stomping. Big games are big games and people can’t say “Joe won big games…all the time.” That’s nonsense and frankly an insult to anyone with an objective opinion despite PSU ties.

This is where I get a little frustrated also. Do people not realize the other team has got to this point for a reason also? They’re pretty good and they have good athletes with resolve. None of the playoff games should be easy. That’s why those teams made it to the playoffs. They have a proven body of work during the season.

Franklin’s job, with all the extenuating circumstances of today’s game and culture is far more difficult than previous generations. I’m sure the previous generations coaches would tell us the same also.

Yes. By 3 points off an unforced error. That’s how games go. Freeman also lost at home to a MAC team as a big favorite. He has lost to Marshall also. If you were a ND fan you would have been calling for his head, but you ignore that to bash Franklin in this instance. Not sure why you even watch if it bothers you that much.

My biggest concern for this game was PSU's propensity to make big mistakes at critical times. The DB falling down and Allar's interception were the most costly. Eliminate just one of those and PSU probably wins.

Allar throwing a crappy pass to Singleton on the goal line and our inability to recover ND's fumble before halftime were not as bad but possibly just as costly.

ND had two big mistakes with the interceptions but those were more due to outstanding defensive plays by PSU. PSU's mistakes were more of the shooting oneself in the foot variety. Seemed to be happening all season, including the playoffs.

It only bothers me to the extent there is no accountability. If this was a one-off or a 50% occurrence or oven an 80% occurance.

Franklin has won exactly one o-n-e game where we had less talent. Since 2014!

Abysmal by any measure.

He should have been held accountable for this long ago.

Every sports fan knows this and they are laughing.

Sad that so many accept it…boo birds were out this year…even at the playoff game. Maybe when people start not showing up will something finally be done about it.

But to each their own…

And we needed to “sweep the knee” after those turnovers. Need to turn those TOs into TDs.

Joe doesnt win all the big games, but won enough and lost some he definately should have. More than most coaches..No? Joe earned some currency No?

I am not a Franklin hater..I love the way he has represented the school so well..his positive approach. I want him to be successful, he has very little currency established that allows him to be immune to criticism. He hasn't changed..not Xs and Os here.. The cultural approach and his logic..he is overly a players coach.. He needs to be tougher IMHO. I can elobirate on a few examples but we know them.

And if it matters.. Back in 02' at the WPB Marriot with few hundred peolle in the room I indirectly challenged Joe on his recruiting strategy-the entire room clapped after my question. Remember our dismal three seasons and we all were talking about needing speed and athletes etc.

Four dismal seasons with one really mediocre season in the middle of it. Why do you think those seasons were dismal with regard to recruiting? Because Joe let nepotism drag the program down and waited too long to recognize it and rectify it. He should have stepped down after 1999.

This game boiled down to three main problems, IMO....

1 - In the first half many missed opportunities to put the game away...I blame AK for again for the third straight game where the run game was dominant and he tried to throw too many passes when ND D was gassed, and Allen and Singleton could have run it down there throat every play and had 21 points in the first half

2 - ND Figured out at the half Refs weren't going to call holding, so took advantage and had their tackles hold Carter and DDS pretty much every play and they were bad blatant holds that greatly affected the game. I know PSU got away with one hold on WR #3 but ND really took advantage on the Oline and it really sucked for out DL guys.

3 - The lack of WR play really showed up again in a big spot. Need a new WR coach and get some quality WR. Hopefully the kids from USC and Troy can make an impact.
So Allar wasn’t one of the problems?

True. But he did not play particularly good football at Penn State. He went undrafted, was initially cut by the New York Giants, didn't play at all for 2 years, then played for the CFL for two seasons.

The talent may have been there, but he needed a ton of development post-college.
The point was that there was a reason he kept getting chances. The talent *was* there.

I think the program is doing well and headed in the right direction. It took 16 years for Joe to be number 1. Joe played for a natty in his 12th year as head coach. Franklin just finished his 10th year as head coach, and had some serious issues to contend with. That was Notre Dame they played, and it was close. They made the final 4. There’s no shame in it. The sky isn’t falling. Franklin will get up and go back to work like Joe did after the 1978 loss to Alabama and the 1985 loss to Oklahoma. He‘ll keep working because that’s what he does.

I'm not reading through this thread, but here's what I saw last night.

It was a hard-fought game between two good and pretty evenly matched teams. And as is usually the case, games like that usually turn on a handful of plays. I saw two- the first quarter pass that Drew threw too low to Nick at the goal line that turned a TD into a FG- costing 4 points. And the then that last pass that turned victory into defeat at the end.

It's not complicated: you make a couple of mistakes like that and you lose.

And these are the things that constantly hold PSU back in the big games. Simple execution in crucial spots. Whether it's goal line offense or proper coverage alignments or missed blocking assignments (4th & 6 vs OSU) or turtling up with the lead (Rose Bowl vs USC, OSU games) or simple scoreboard math, when you play in a game and you're equal or lesser talent, you can't make those mistakes and expect to win the game. With the exception of the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game and the walkoff at Iowa, this regime has not been able to overcome these crippling mistakes.

Joe has a record of unprecedented success in the biggest games in the biggest stage. So while we can quibble on the margins, the results speak for them self.

Franklin has no such record . In fact, it may be the one if tne worst ever.

Give someone else a chance.
Geez, how people forget the 1979 Sugar Bowl and a certain goal line stand or the 1986 Orange Bowl (two national championship game losses) to make it suit their incorrect narrative.
