Since we are all snowflakes, I figured I would start a safe space for all of us to share our like-minded way of life. This board has been overrun by the Trump patriarchy, and this thread will serve as our intellectual hide out. Below I have some topics/questions to provoke discussion. If you were unable to comprehend the title, this thread is for liberals only (with exceptions made for moderate libertarians and people who don't identify as a specific party but meet my arbitrary standards of intelligence as well). I saw this video that was shared by a Facebook page that I follow called Being Liberal, it's where I go for all of my fair and bias-free news. Anyhoo, this video is about why facts don't convince people, and at the end it provides some good tips on how to converse with the average Trump voter/modern conservative. It's short and concise



Also, on an unrelated note, I have some questions for discussion

1. How did you become a liberal? Was there a certain life experience that changed you? Or have you always just known?
2. What kind of frame do you have for your college degree?
3. What benefits do you give to your employees?

But, to answer your first question: I'm not a liberal per se, but I am definitely moderate. I lean left on social issues, but I lean right on some fiscal issues. I got into theology much sooner than I did politics, so my leftish-leaning theology informed the way I approached certain political issues.

i don't follow that particular fb page, and in general political fb pages are pretty awful with equally awful memes. however, it's quite the hot take to assert that this random, biased fb page is the same as an outlet that has peddled the sandy hook and pizzagate conspiracy theories.

@iceheart08 youre 100% correct and one of the few liberals I respect on here bc you try to be sensible about all this mess and call a spade a spade. @clemsonpaw00 is an idealogue who cant seem to put his biases on the shelf to have a rational discussion. Media matters, info wars, breitbart AND Being Liberal are all the same echo chambers that drive a wedge into constructive political debate.

Edit: But I cant blame him I was the same way when I first entered the political realm. Hopefully when he gets older he'll realize not everything is black and white and more times than not a lot of grey.

I understand your frustration, young lad. I remember when I first began following politics and it tugged me in so many different directions I wasn't able to see through the BS. We all get it...you're a big Hillary supporter and believer of all things liberal. The DNC would be proud it was so easy getting you to your knees so quickly and at such a young age.

ya hate to see this. i love that you think supporting a megalomaniac reality tv star for pres is "seeing through the bs."

not even really sure where you get this other stuff. as i've stated many times, i really strongly dislike hillary clinton, mainly because i think she's actually extremely moderate and hawkish. she and bill in the 90s were basically moderate republicans in how they governed. i also feel no strong attachment to the democratic party/dnc itself. my own personal ideology is obviously left, though, so i end up voting for democrats.

I don't think that's accurate. I wholly support Universal Healthcare (be that through Single Payer or other means) and am not the sort who thinks that all regulations are evil. I do think the rich are not taxed enough and that we can do good things with different tax brackets. The most socialist about me is probably that I support Universal Basic Income in concept (I think that there will come a time when it's necessary but we're not there, may not be there in my lifetime).

a) agree that not everyone on the right is uneducated. not even close. but in recent times, particularly in this trump era, many have chosen to be either willfully ignorant or willfully selfish to a degree i didn't ever conceive as possible. five years ago, if you would've told me that conservatives would vote en masse for donald trump over hillary clinton--who, by all measures, is really a pretty moderate democrat--i would've called you crazy, because i still thought that many of them valued country over party. i no longer consider that to be the case. the degree to which otherwise educated people have gone to shill for a complete and utter moron astounds me. they've abandoned large chunks of their conservative ethos for a quasi-fascist. it's really quite disheartening.

b) on the reading thing - again, i don't think it's that conservatives are uneducated or don't read. my mistake if it came out that way. the problem is that they no longer consider objective analysis and facts to be, well, objective. they read something, but when it conflicts with their previously held and often mistaken beliefs, they're unable to overcome the cognitive dissonance and either dismiss what they've read as "fake news" or find a dubious source that will confirm rather than challenge what they think they're supposed to believe. how else would an issue that has seen no partisanship around the globe--climate change--be seen as some liberal conspiracy by many in the US? conservatives, even the really smart ones, have now had to attach themselves to these ridiculous, anti-science positions.

I've been a proud liberal my whole life, and despite people trying to use it as a smear, it actually indicates freedom of thought and a desire for societal progression. What in God's name could ever be wrong with that?
