1st: Kaytron for 5 - 6 yards, Rutgers calls TO with 1:54 left. They have 1 left
2nd & 5: Kaytron for 3, Rutgers calls TO with 1:50 left. They have no TOs left
3rd & 2: huge play. Singleton & Allen in. Kaytron for no gain
4th & 2: PSU is letting the clock run
4th & 2: PSU tried to get Rutgers to jump, but called TO at 1:04, as the play call was running out
4th & 2: Rapp for a 1st down.

Ball game!!!!!
team did something we don't see often : game on the line, just need one first down: 4th and 2 and make it. We've had a heck of a lot of games, same scenario, don't make it, and opponent drives the field scores and wins.

The team did multiple things they dont do often. They kept the game close vs Rutgers, almost lost and had no defense.

Psu usually blows Rutgers out and the game usually isn't on the line. Maybe Franklin should have kept the games vs Rutgers closer.

It was the right decision--don't like the play call but it worked
We escape Rutgers lol
Hopefully that's the end of any coaching era with someone who worked for Franklin or Paterno
Anyone who thinks the next coach must have ties to Paterno is stupid.

Anyone who thinks the next coach must not have ties to Paterno is also stupid.

Let’s all look at the bright side, at least we don’t have to sit through the rest of the weekend dealing with a loss to Rutgers.
Yes, thank you. I wouldn’t have come back onto the board until Tuesday.

Yes but now we probably have to sit through a horrible bowl game with an even more depleted roster.

Well, Terry just proved he’s at least as good as James Franklin lol. I’m not making a comment about who should be coach, more so a comment on the previous guy.
Were you impressed with Terry almost losing to Rutgers? Franklin routinely blew Rutgers out.

NUmber 5 strutting. *******
That easily could and should have been PI on him. I hate that behavior so much it gives me cognitive dissonance rooting for them.
I know it's bad form to quote your own post, but the game was moving quick when I responded. This BS at PSU came to prominence with the CJF era. This chump was beaten badly on that play and instead of going back to the huddle and thanking everyone who flushed the QB out of the pocket forcing an underthrow, he gets up, makes sure there's no flag which there probably should have been, and starts gloating. Everyone with a brain knew he got lucky and went "whew" when it was underthrown, yet he acted like he broke up a hail Mary in the Super Bowl. I doubt an OSU DB does that on a 2nd down play when they're smoking Rutgers 48-3 in the 4th Q. Not this guy, they are losing late and he's strutting when everyone knows he got lucky as hell. I really hope this ends with the next chapter in Penn State football.

How many times did Jake Butt talk about Rutgers taking advantage of PSU for only having 6 in the box (4 DL & only 2 LBs)?

Maybe a 4-2-5 defense doesn't work so well when you do that every play and you're already weak at DT & LB.

Twice we had too many men on the field and a couple of times we weren't even lined up when Rutgers snapped the ball.

I'm not sure if the Rutgers RB's progress was ever stopped when the refs blew the play dead after 13 yards. 5 defenders couldn't pull him down. That was embarrassing!

And WTF was with the safety blitz from 20 yards back? Kaliakmanis saw that from a mile away and tossed an easy TD pass to the open spot.

Finally, what happened to AJ Harris. Wasn't he projected as a 1st round pick? Today he got badly burned on a long TD pass then followed it up with a flagrant holding penalty.

I realize that we're undermanned at DT & LB but the whole defense looked confused and showed limited effort. Can we fire Knowles before the bowl game?

The extra weeks of practice would be good for the younger players but the game will almost certainly be a stinker.
That's the conventional wisdom. But is practice with a staff that won't be coaching you next year really that valuable? I don't see much to gain.

Glad the Seniors won their last game, but incredible that this was a team we (I) thought was going to win the B1G and play in the NC game. Never thought I’d be praying to win the last game to become Bowl eligible.
Even championship teams win close games that weren’t supposed to be close. We’ve lost our share of close games this year, so I’m not going to get too worked up.

And not have to watch one more down of this badly coached Jim Knowles defense (hopefully).

Were you impressed with Terry almost losing to Rutgers? Franklin routinely blew Rutgers out.
Were you impressed with another BGJ choke job against Oregon followed up by losses to UCLA (yes…0-5 UCLA!!!), and Northwestern (yes THAT Northwestern!!!)!!!???

Again, not a commentary on the future—a commentary on this year. As a reminder:

BGJ’s schedule (3-3, no power 4 wins)
Nevada
FIU
Villanova
Oregon
@ UCLA
Northwestern

Terry Smith’s schedule
@ Iowa
@ Ohio State
Indiana
@ Michigan State
Nebraksa
@ Rutgers

It’s even worse when you look at it this way. BGJ went 3-3 with only one away game against a winless team. Smalls went 3-3 with four away games.

BGJ coached one ranked team. Terry coached against the #1 and #2 teams in back to back weeks.

BGJ coached all of his 3-3 games with his starting QB. Terry coached all of his games with BGJ’s backup QB (who would have been 3rd string had Beau stayed).

BGJ coached a majority of his games with his starting LB’s. Terry coached all of his games with basically one viable LB.

It’s insane how everything we’ve been complaining about wasn’t imaginary. Terry just did some common sense coaching things and outcoached BGJ.
