No recruiting talk, just talk about high school football.
South Panola-West Point. I think WP can beat them, but they won't. This will be the game of the year.
I think the four district winners in 6A will be
District 1: South Panola (with no serious competition)
District 2: I think Northwest Rankin breaks through. They beat Madison Central last year, and lost to Clinton - then found themselves third in a 3-way tiebreaker at 7-1. I think they can run the table this year to the 6A semis, where they will have to play USP.
District 3: Oak Grove gets it done. Meridian lost too much.
District 4: Gulfport
New face of the playoffs: Greenville. Like Natchez a couple years ago, Greenville gets a little better and makes the playoffs as the District 2 No. 4 seed. Unlike Natchez, they won't win a playoff game because they would travel to Batesville in the first round.
Don't be surprised: If Olive Branch loses their first round playoff game to Clinton/Madison Central loser.
Championship Game: South Panola beats Gulfport.
Other things I'm excited about watching:
6A: Northwest Rankin. Their best team in years. Early challenges from Pearl and Mendenhall then a weak region until they play Clinton and Madison late.
5A: Will West Point easily roll, or will Starkville provide an in-region challenge. Wayne County- are they back? Is Pearl the Metro area's best shot at having someone play in Jackson?
4A: The state championship game will be the North final. Lafayette-Noxubee.
3A: Aberdeen-Forest rematch in Jackson? Looks that way in the preseason.
2A: This is where I think someone has a chance to come out of nowhere and win the whole thing.
1A: All the MAIS' eyes are on University Christian. 9-3 in the MAIS last year - joined the MHSAA this year. UCS can make the playoffs, but it will be as a low seed. Mt. Olive in your division is just too tough. And God bless them come basketball season. Those white boys won't know what hit them.
