First let me say i have no dog in this fight. That said, after watching the officials steal the game from gretna last night i felt morrally obligated to comment on the officiating. The best officials should always let the players determine the outcome of the game not the jokers running around in the zebra stripes. In my opinion the official who decided to throw the flag on gretna for excessive celebration after scoring their final touchdown is the most assinine call i can ever remember in a high school game. These are 17 and 18 year old kids in a big rivalry game not robots .If you want to take the excitment and emotion out of the game then you might as well just play checkers The official who threw that flag might want to consider a different profession like playing santa claus on christmas day
It’s bad across the board in all levels.
Mechanics are trash and there are multiple instances a game where there is a lot of confusion. Definitely not a good look.
Also, since many associations have gone to the usage of IFBs, officials are oftentimes too busy finding the button to talk to their crew mates instead of confidently selling a spot or a call or a decision.
And then finally, I know that there are guys out there who aren’t even close to being athletic who are officiating. But even if one isn’t athletic, at least make an attempt to look athletic and be in the right spot and show some hustle. Also, make wide and clear motions on little things like stopping the clock or winding the clock
And speaking of the clock, can we have people paying attention to the clock? I know some of them are all-in-one scoreboards where they also have to input the down and distance. However, clock accuracy should be paramount. I’ve been to two games in two weeks since returning to the States and both games had more clock issues compared to the two+ years I officiated.
