it reinforces it. i just don't agree that it will have an effect on the state that is even noticeable. i guess the effect would be that people elsewhere will be slower to change their minds but personally i don't think they are changing their minds anyways because we all know that bad news, poor race relations, and scandal sell in the media.

I just think if we ever have any hope at all of changing the perception of the rest of the country/world, the first thing that has to happen is for this kind of **** to stop.

that first guy that started chanting this several years back thinks now that the klan plans to come to campus to support him. must be a great feeling knowing he killed a song played at the school and that it could be the impetus for a change in the mascot.

/it would be nice if this **** did stop. agree completely.

And he was denied service at a bar for being a "Southern Republican". All the bartender knew about him was his accent. We will most likely never overcome the perception image. It makes me sad, but justifies my dislike for non-southerners.

The meaning of that is WAY worse than the FDWL. So if they have to change everything about them, do it all at once and be done with it. This stuff cropping up years and years makes the whole State look bad.
When was it that they banned "sticks"?

For selfish reasons I know this hurts their potential, so I kind of hope they do drag it out, but my common sense tells me that the time is now.

well, I cannot defend some of our fans. Stupid is as stupid does. I hate to tell these stupid 17'ers this, but the 17'inf war ended in 1865 and guess what, the south lost. It's over, we aren't rising again. Let it go.

I was living "down under" and when it was learned I was from MS, I was asked "Don't you still hang your blacks there?". They also thought Icould automatically play blues harmonica and all US smokeless tobacco had shards of glass in it to increase addiction.........

I politely informed her that I had seen as many KKK rallies in Toronto as I had MS. Apparently it is well known that MS is still in the 50s.

This will be fun to watch students try to claim the chant isn't racist. When Richard Barrett and the KKK both join your side of the crusade. That means it is probably a good time to change sides.

Yea, I often wonder who Patient Zero is and how he would feel about all of this. It had to start somewhere, and it didn't start long ago. Whoever had the bright idea first has to feel like an idiot.

someday that fool will entertain the notion of running for some office.

Then he will remember that.

.........."A small group of male students, all wearing blazers and ties, sat behind the goal post on Saturday to chant. As a consequence, Jones stopped the song."

Not a fair description............Dont this describe the whole student section...

What do you consider "long ago"? One of my best friends said the student section was doing this at full volume the entire time he was at school. That was 1990 through 1995. I consider 19 years a pretty long time and he didn't give me the impression it had just started.

I have been going to games since the mid-80s, and I've only missed a handful of home games during that period.

I didn't start hearing the chant until around 2002. Maybe it was going on before then, but it definitely didn't take off until around then. Either way, it's not part of the song, not part of the lyrics, and if anyone does consider it a tradition, it's only a tradition with a small percentage of the stadium.

Gosh this is really heating up... It's not good news by any means for the state, but i don't think it will hurt the way MS is perceived outside the state all that much. It may just confirm the stereotype.

I will say that this does erase any ground that Ole Miss and the state of MS gained from the debate.

When I lived in SoCal I dated a chick who was originally from the Bay Area. We were cruising down I-5 and she was giving me a ration of **** about being from the South, and how that meant that I was a racist. Just then she got cut off by a Mexican guy in a ricer and she began screaming (she suffered from severe road rage), "You 17ing beaner!". I just looked at her and said, "And I'm the racist one here..." She never brought the subject up again. edit to add sidenote: She was a direct descendant of Confederate General Braxton Bragg...

Second anecdote: When I was in the Navy one of my buddies was a black guy from Memphis. He met his wife when he was stationed at Bayonne, NJ, and she was from Boston. He told me that when they got married, she couldn't understand why many of his friends were white guys from the South. He told her that she'd figure it out when they got stationed in the South, but that he never knew where he stood with Northern whites or blacks. Further, he did with Southern whites and blacks, and that if you liked each other that was it, there was no fake friendship or treatment based on race. He noted that it was a helluva thing to be discriminated against by New England blacks because he was from the South...
