22.1 million viewers tuned in to the 2025 national championship game, making it the most watched non-NFL sporting event over the past year.

NFL games average 17.5M for regular season. 38.5M for playoffs. Last super bowl was 123.7M.

Imagine the ratings if they had held it on some day other than inauguration day!!**

Shocking, really, that a game involving two of the most popular teams in college football drew high ratings, while SEC fans complained they weren't interested in watching.

It’s down from last year.

Anybody got any numbers including all bowls through playoffs compared previous years?

I know I watched a lot less than usual. I watched most of semi finals and much less if any of semi’s.

Both of those programs have enormous fan bases, but are disliked by almost everyone outside their fan bases.

Same for Alabama but people watch them hoping for a loss. I'm sure a lot of Michigan fans were big Notre Dame fans that night. Hated teams are sometimes the biggest draw on TV.

I think that game for Michigan fans would’ve been like us watching OM and Auburn play for the national championship. They hate one and really don’t like the other.

Like someone pointed out in the other thread, when adjusting for population growth, college football is slightly decreasing in popularity. Not surprising, as the boring era of the 4-teamer, combined with about 3 teams truly competing, cast many people off. Then they bungle the new playoff.

I do have some hope they'll straighten out the playoff and get things on the right track.

Yes, but when you have two hated teams playing......Michigan doesn't like Notre Dame either.

I didn't watch either for much more than "oh, that's on"
Same and when it comes to college playoffs, even in basketball and baseball, it's hard to hold on and keep watching if your team isn't in it.

That's why I think comparing championship games from different eras is kinda dumb. We need to come up with a smart metric of viewership. I mean it's hard to compare a single basketball game to a game 3 of the men's CWS......because the men play 3 games. If you compare viewership from all 3 for the 'event' (in this case, the championship), maybe they are closer. Maybe the metric is eyeballs per some unit of content. It can't be eyeballs per hour because that's essentially what we have now, with football having much less content.

Obviously football still represents much more valuable advertising time, being shorter with less content, and more popular. But it also should be looked at over the whole course of the playoff, not just one solitary championship game.

Also they made a dumb move by having the game on ESPN. Would have been much better to have it on ABC.
True. But dint think it’s ever been on ESPN. Telling line in the may article is 3 of the 5 least watched games are in the last 5 years.

People are realizing the NC trophy goes to the highest bidder. College Football is slowly dying.
