Sorry old timers, even the traditional big boys are doing it ;) They are wearing it vs. Penn State.

This is a change of color with a traditional design. This isn't close to our faux battle wear. Making the comparison actually bolsters the anti-salmon crowd's argument that you can update and still be traditional.

Nice try though!

Looking again there are 8 horse chestnuts on the number 8. The 55 has nothing. So maybe they will individualized. Can't imagine The Ohio State University allowing horse chestnuts on players who didn't earn them. Even more ridiculous would be 55 of them on the 55.

with the old timer crap. I'm 57 and like our 1x per year black unis. I also like our away unis. As most have pointed out over and over it is the Salmon home all red that many folks don't like. Going traditional red/white for home games last last game and mixing in 1 Black out and the current away whites would be a great compromise/combo. Plenty of helmet options to play with too.

Don't know how this became about our regular unis.
There are plenty of people upset about the trend of wearing alternate unis like these.
A tOSU fan called into Eddie George on XM yesterday and was very upset (Eddie likes the idea of a tOSU blackout btw).

How long did posters on the board complain and fight (incorrectly) that black wasn't an official color of ours and that prideful programs like tOSU would never have a black alternate?

The OP is speaking to those people.

And to those who are about to say "Wait!, Roots, black IS NOT a color!" CLICK HERE

WHERE IS THE FAKE LEAVES ON THE JERSEYS!!!!! Tape some of those nuts on there too!

How can we be the only ones to take our mascot literally? We better have fake blood on our uniforms next year to go with the dents and scratches.

Speaking of old guys, Woody Hayes would have punched the Nike designer in the neck for coming in with that.

Black isn't an official color of Rutgers and white isn't either. Only scarlet is RU's official color.

But it's nice to see Ohio State's black uniforms as uninspiring a look as our own!

Official Color: We Are Scarlet

Rutgers' official school color is scarlet
. Rutgers scarlet is often used in conjunction with black, gray, and white. The Pantone® color system equivalent for Rutgers scarlet is Pantone® 186. Pantone® is a worldwide standard system for designating colors.

If Rutgers' only official color is scarlet, then why don't we consider using other secondary or complimentary colors - other than white and black? Like Oregon, which has trotted uniforms, this season, that haven't featured any of their colors (like an entirely white uniform with silver trim) as well as uniforms using their secondary colors as their primaries (like the yellow uniforms pictured above), RU can use just about anything else to go with scarlet jerseys. For example, we can have scarlet with: yellow/gold (for RutgersAl's "USC of the East" look) or blue (for an Ole Miss look, I guess). But, my point is that scarlet doesn't only have to go with white or black.

Black and white are ancillary colors to the scarlet but they are not classified as official colors. You can find mentions of "scarlet and white" and "scarlet and black" almost from the start of scarlet being voted on by the Rutgers students in Kirkpatrick Chapel on May 17, 1869.

There have been times when the scarlet and other colors were used. The 1938 team wore scarlet jerseys and gold gabardine pants (because the manufacturer of football pants made them in that color). In 1915, Rutgers wore maroon colored jerseys because the dyes needed to make them scarlet were scarce because they came from Europe during WWI.

But usually the different colors were due to circumstances beyond their control. That is certainly not the case today.

My own opinion is that with all the new "looks" and colors, you create a generic looking football team with generic wear. That goes for us AND our opponents these days. We wear black, the opponents wear black. Everyone has their "black look" and the result is that everyone basically looks like all the other teams. What was once a special look is now the flavor of the week. Nike, or whoever is providing the uniforms, then markets the knock offs and makes a bundle. So they're just interested in anything different they can change on a school's uniform so they can sell that year's "model." They couldn't care less about a "look" that represents your school over the long haul. At this point, you barely see the school's acknowledged color on some of these uniform selections.

Next up on the "how do we make a buck off of college football teams" ... well why don't they just put corporate logo patches all over the uniforms like they do for race cars. And do we really need "R" on your jerseys? Maybe the producers of the next Superman movie will pay us to put an "S" on there instead.

And do you really need to call yourself Rutgers? Let's sell that off for a 10-year naming rights contract. I'd suggest we do the same for the Stadium too but someone beat me to the punch.

Source, what is the official description of the original Rutgers flag?

Doesn't it say something about black text and numbers on a scarlet field?

Not sure what Rutgers has to say about the "original" Rutgers flag.

The 8 Jersey is just a fan shirt. NCAA rules say the numbers must be a solid color. The 8 is for the number of national championships.

I think they look terrible. Why did OSU sell out to Nike? I thought they had a lucrative football program? By the way I think our white uniforms with the block R looked the best. I also heard that here at RU the push towards the black uniforms had more to do with the athletes preference. They thought the black uniforms looked cooler.

I love being an old-timer and actually recognizing the teams on the field... I mean, it's definitely better following teams with different uniforms each week. Who needs tradition?:uzi:
