we did this a couple of years ago when the Texans had a big choice to make with Williams or Bush...I said Williams, most said Bush (Meo called Williams an absolutely stupid pick)...couple of years later we see how that one turned out- good choice by the Texans and while Bush has been good at times, Bush has been hurt alot as well...

What do you do if you are the Lions? You went 0-16 and you have very little talent. You needs lots of players. Do you:

A. Go ahead and take Stafford and start building a team around him?

B. Draft the LT out of Baylor and since you probably arent going to win more than 4 this season, draft one of the good class of QB's next year? Can you ride it out with Culpepper one more year?

C. Draft a defensive stud your team sorely needs?

I say B..draft the LT, ride it out with Culpepper...I'd probably even try to trade the top pick to drop a slot or 3 and get more picks....

Detroit's problems are way too big for any 1 player to solve. They need lots of good players more than they need 1 great one.

I agree. I'm just not all that sold on Stafford, and you've got some good QB's coming in next year. I have really been impressed with Colt McCoy moreso than Tebow or Bradford.

I say take the LT, go 2-14 or whatever and then take a QB.

LT's are just as hard, if not harder to find than a good QB.

Trade the #1 pick for multiple picks.

1. Detroit is definitely not one player away from being a good team. They need help in so many areas that they should do themselves a favor and get rid of the pick in favor of 2-3 later picks.
2. There is no clear #1 pick this year. A lot of people have Stafford going first, but he is a long ways from being a can't miss prospect in my mind. This was supposed to be a very strong QB draft, but it's turned into a pretty weak one since so many players decided to return to school.
3. The last thing the Lions need to do right now is tie up $50-$60 million in a #1 pick that's not a sure thing. An Alex Smith situation would be devastating for them.

Regarding the Williams/Bush situation, I still say the jury's out. I could support either pick right now. Mario Williams is as solid of a defensive end as there is in the league right now, and Bush is an all around star who was the #1 fantasy player at mid-season last year. Like you said, though, he can't seem to stay healthy. I think they'll both have great careers.

The problem is nobody wants the first overall pick. You end up giving an unproven player to much money. Most teams are content with staying where they are and paying less money. I can't think of one team off the top of my head that would give up picks to have the first overall pick and a huge contract tied up in one player.

I like how everybody says trade for more picks. Like any team this year wants to do that. This class has the potential to be worse than the 2005 draft. Try to think of a team that wants that No. 1 spot and the money that will have to be paid out.

**damn Nola, my thoughts exactly. you must have posted that while I was typing.

and I couldnt trade down, I'd give some serious consideration in taking the LB from Wake...Detroit was awful on defense, and defensive players are safer from a bust standpoint...

I just cant see drafting Stafford when they have so many needs

That's probably the best route to take. Aaron Curry. They like the Texans were could use an upgrade everywhere.

I would trade, trade, trade until I had like 10-12 2-7th round picks and draft loads of potential on defense with a few offensive linemen mixed in. Their skill position players are more than serviceable with Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith, and Culpepper is, well he sucks, but he can be alright. They need to be better in the trenches and especially on defense. Get better in those areas and the skill position players start looking a lot better without having to pay out the *** for new ones. Take a look at the titans 2 years ago. They had practically no talent at skill positions and made it to the playoffs because they had a good defense and a good offensive line. The Lions tried to draft a franchise qb in the first round with Joey Harrington and we all see how well that worked out. If they draft Stafford I think they'll go 0-16 again possibly.

I think it is a wash right now from an on the field standpoint because of Bush's injuries. From a marketing and moral boost point, it's Bush by a longshot. The excitement he brought with him when N.O. needed it was invaluable. No way a D-lineman brings that to N.O.

2 years from now when all that energy is gone and Bush loses a step then it'll be Williams. But that's the nature of most RB's in the NFL.

Williams is a Pro Bowl pass rusher that has 30.5 sacks in 3 seasons- 26 in the last 2

Bush?

The prolific Bush is averaging 516 yards rushing, 533 yards receiving, and less than 7 TD's per season....

He's a very good prospect with smarts and a great arm, and he performed well in the SEC. Most importantly, he actually wants to be there. If they go 4-12 this season with Culpepper and pick high again, maybe their QB of choice pulls an Eli/Elway and refuses to waste his career in a dying city with one of the worst franchises in sports.

Draft Stafford and completely turn the page on the Millen Era, sell lots of jerseys and get people excited, don't delay things for another year and waste having Calvin Johnson under contract. Get a tackle with that second 1st rounder to protect your investment.

It makes sense to say trade the pick b/c there's no obvious #1, but all the other teams know that too. They don't want to give away picks for the right to guarantee tens of millions of dollars to an iffy 1st overall pick any more than Detroit does.

But I'm bias in my thought too.

I also wonder what Bush could do playing for the Texans. Slaton had pretty good numbers this past year.

Stafford would sell some season tickets next year and that is what they need. They will draft stafford..

and football is quite different from basketball- Football has 22 starters PLUS special teams- basketball- 5.

Trying to say the 42nd leading rusher in the NFL this past season is even with the guy that been 3rd and 7th in the NFL in sacks the last 2 years is pretty much a joke

Trying to compare an offensive player to a defensive one is apples and oranges. Overall longevity a DE will outlast a RB. But just based on talent Bush has the ability change a game with his offense. This will be the year to see if he is worth the hype. He will be given the bulk of the load this season.

its who will help your team the most- and the Texans obviously made the right decision. If Bush gets the bulk of the carries in NO this season, he wont finish it
