Our pitchers, on an individual basis, have regressed from last year. If this were a Polk coached team, or a Croom coached team, who would be taking the blame for that? It's hard to argue with what Cohen did at Kentucky and I think that he was the right hire and will make State very good... however I am currently not happy with the play OR the coaching this season.

Many of our gusy have gotten better according to stats. Even Bowen isn't really worse. I think his ERA is better (but that's mostly because his innings are so down). Our team ERA in conference and overall is better as well.

And this is without Weatherford or Lalor coming out of the pen.

Granted, we aren't through a whole year yet, but we only have about 15 games left and Routt will throw 4 of them.

our starters were worse last year. the bullpen seems worse this year but i haven't checked the stats. i think part of that is that last year we could put weatherford in and it was game over. this year when we put a new pitcher in there's usually not much of a change. i think we'd have won at least 3 more sec games if weatherford was back

edit: i do remember cohen talking up our bullpen a bit right before the season started. i don't know what was up with that. maybe they're all stars in practice. i think he said "it's going to surprise some people." just wish it was in a good way

I would say that the only guy that has regressed is Bowen. We have a few Fr. that just aren't worth a darn. Caleb Reed can't throw strikes, David Hayes looks like he is throwing batting practice, and I have to wonder how bad Tyler Johnson is that the staff is making him RS.

I'd have to give Thompson some credit for Routt. I don't know many people that thought he would be having the kind of season that he is now. Routt may very well end up a Fr. All-American.

to his comment about the bullpen "just not having it". They may very well look decent in practice or when no one is at the plate, but turn the lights on, and it's a totally different story.

I guess, what I'm saying is that we put too much pressure on our pitchers, but at least I'm a going a step further and saying that I don't think that's acceptable on the player's part.

he's our coach, but after watching the Kentucky series, I am not impressed with Cohen's past or present. Maybe the reload in 2010 will show promise...I just said wait 'til next year, ugh!

Are you the guy that was sitting next to me yelling "TAKE HIM BACK KENTUCKY!" the whole game? If so, you're an idiot...

In all seriousness, I echo what everybody else has said. Flat out, we're just not very talented on the pitching front, and I'm amazed that we're even still in the discussion for an SEC birth.

unlike JC, I don't redicule my team in public!
You are the coach for whom?

Do you "redicule" your alleged team in private?

Do you believe in running stands as punishment?

Do you have an unhealthy obsession with Jacob Hester?

Even if he had stayed there and had an off year like they are having, he still has a good coaching record overall.

The seniors from this class are the guys that he recruited after they won all of 24 games. Not to mention that it was UK where they have no tradition and have so little talent that they have to go to Canada to get guys.

Cohen's best class at UK was his last one, and they lost their top pitching prospect Daniel Webb, after Cohen decided to come to MSU. Webb is a guy that probably would have been UK's ace this year as a Fr., and is currently pitching at a Florida JUCO from what I understand. I have seen Webb projected as a second round pick in the draft this year. In fact, I believe he wanted to follow Cohen to MSU, but because of the buyout agreement between Cohen and UK, Cohen discouraged it. For those who don't remember, the buyout agreement was that UK would let Cohen out of his contract buyout as long as he didn't take any assistants with him and any recruits.

I'd also venture to guess that Cohen is a better coach than Henderson, who is the current UK HC.

...I've had qualms with Cohen's coaching in spots, but I'm giving him this season.

He walked into a situation where is having to re-teach a bunch of screwed up (i.e., badly coached) players how to play the game of baseball on the college level.

All I can say is this season ended with the Auburn series.

Yet I am excited about the recruits Cohen is bringing in; hopefully the new pitchers can pitch & the new position players actually know how to play the game of baseball.

On paper at least, Cohen has assembled about the best recruiting class you can expect given the circumstances.

and watched those nutless pitchers take the mound not named Routt or Whitney, then you know there is not much he can do...

We scored 17 runs on Sunday- and LOST. Enough said. Your going to have to give the man time to fix Polk's mess.

First you say "I am not impressed with Cohen's past or present". Then you say "JC needs to get the handle on some of his antics and coach like we know he can."

Which is it, bud?

Leave.......Please.

I'm willing to give him time to fix Polk's mess, but some of the decisions he's made this year, Polk would have been crucified for.
It could be that Cohen is excellent at working with great talent and top competitors, but is trying to get these guys to do more than they can do. So that just means we gotta get some of these top-talent guys in here, and it seems like he's doing that.

is that the previous regime was so into stattion-to-station baseball, this new "aggressive approach" takes some experience getting used to.
I think Cohen's frustration is due to the fact he just cant believe Miss State has the same talent level as Delta State. I am also sure that the mentality of the players AND their parents is just frustrating.

Lets just get thru this season and I have no doubts that next season will be much more enjoyable for coaches, players, parents, and fans

You mean to tell me that somebody in OUR fane base was moronic enough to spew that crap at the game? Seriously?

Cohen's eventually gonna say to hell with these retards and go elsewhere.

Our pitching should be a lot worse than it was last year. We had a bad pitching staff last year and we lost Pigott, Lalor, and Weatherford. Those were the only 3 that were any good at all last year. We had no returning pitching this year. It is amazing that they are statistically as good as they have been.
