Ok.. I know it don't amount to much but I've been drinkin' so I'll spill the beans on my Kent Hull
story,,, I grew up in Greenwood as a pothead..Kent was a big time athlete back then and they had nothing to do with us back mid 70's .. that's just the way it was ... I was just a littlle fk who only played baseball.. Kent had the best throw to 2nd base I've ever seen... from his catcher position, it was a tailing screw ball type of throw that was a 2nd baseman's dream that fell right into the 2nd basebman's glove that was bad news to any opponent who had larcency in his heart trying to steal 2nd base...
he was one bad mother 17er behind the plate... he could have done it all at any sport people..believe me..
I would encourage any parent today to steer their children away from pot or anything that seperates their children from associating their children from the likes of people like Kent Hull.. I regret to this day from not getting to know him better.... my life would have been better had I led a better life in my high school days and got to have known him better.... but I was a problem child and I missed out on someone special....
I was a damned good student in the 10th grade when he sat next to me in Greenwood High in Mr. Staten's Geometry class.... he was a senior and I was a sophomore... he always joked with others that I won't mention saying "that's the smartest dopehead I've ever seen"....( I made straight A's including a 102 on the final semester exam that saw 4 or 5 actual good students fail the class entirely) ( and I was NOT a model student in all classes) it was all in good fun... but that's the way things were back then... I've since moved on, married , raising a 7 year old son , and shed my stupid ways... only with the exceptional vodka lapses that I have that unfortunately shared with the six pack at times ..including tonight..
I knew his younger brother Maury quite well... he was acutally a couple of years younger than me... God bless you Maury... sorry....I'm not a face book kind of guy...God Bless you fella... you were good people just like your brother..
when we beat Bama in '80, I was the first little 17 you saw on the Bellard show running on the field with my Dad right behind me with the whiskey cup in his hand
Maury told me several months later that the line judges had seen the nose guard knock the ball from Kent's hand before John Bond could take a knee on the final play... that ended the game but there was a huge pile of humanity still going for the "loose ball" at the "end" of the game not knowing the game was over ...... I can still remember yelling at the big pile .. 4 feet away from them "DOGS WIN"..."GAME OVER"... !!!! but even though I weighed 120 lbs, I had 30,000 other fans headed my way that would cover my back.......the greatest MSU time of my life
until approx 1 minute later Kent would emerge from that crazy pile of humanity and I was the first fan he hugged..I could tell he knew who I was and my past didn't matter at the moment it was all Greenwood and MSU...
folks... don't let your kids miss out on hanging with the cream of the crop.....don't let them miss out on hanging with the best... I will always regret not getting to know the likes of Kent Hull ... stomp their asses in the ground if you have to.... make sure they get to know the cream of the crop like Kent Hull....don't let them 17 around with dopeheads like I did; I wished I'd live a cleaner high school life which would have given me the opportunity to have really known him well....
he was the best we ever had... he never pushed his will on others even though the physical and political power was his at Greenwood High... he could have singlehandedly made mine and other potheads lives miserable...but he didn't because he did what God told him to do....and that's just the God's Honest Truth... he was the most humble bad *** I've ever been around... he was never rude to me like the rest of the jocks.. he was total class and I'd bet my *** he talking it up with the Big Man right now....
God Bless You Kent ...Rest in Peace....
