Ok, lets assume for a moment we hire Manny Diaz.

Where does everyone stand on this? At first I was all for it, but now I am wavering a little. What do we really know about this guy? What kind of schemes does he run? I see where he might have taken some of his philosophy from Mickey Andrews, which ain't bad at all.

I just don't know that much about him other than he seems to be a sharp, young coach.

Here is my position on the prospective hire:

I am in favor of youth, aggressive style and good recruiting. Previous success against the spread is preferred.
I am not in favor of a retread, with a few exceptions...maybe a Tenuta, someone like that...
I think I prefer a young defensive-minded head coach at a smaller school or DC at a smaller school, like Diaz, over a position coach at an SEC school who has never been a DC. Although I really like Brick Haley, I would be a little worried about how it would work out. Rodney Garner would be a good one.

He studied with Rex Ryan in the off season.

He runs an aggressive style defense.

He's young.

His dad is apparently the mayor of Miami.

Just to clear up that little, common misconception.

I really don't like hiring retreads. We have already seen how that process works. When Torbush was hired there was all this talk about having a veteran coach on staff and how that made things better. I think thats a bunch of crap and want nothing to do with an older coach who was fired or who has had poor performance in the past few years. I like the Diaz guy cause he did a great job at MTSU this year. If your good there then there is a lower risk that you will do poorly at State. Mullen has stated from the begining that his philisophy on defense is that they need to be an attacking aggressive defense and Diaz looks to share that same philosophy.

I would not assume that just because this guy coached under Andrews several years ago means that he is going to be a replica of his schemes. If you can get to the QB with four I am all for it, but having 10 seconds to throw the ball is another. During the glory years at FSU, they always had a dominant DL. They simply did not have to blitz very often.

While I understand where you are coming from, I'd like to think several coaches on our staff could teach a DC how to stop/slowdown the spread offense.

I've been told one of the rubs between Dan and Torbush is Carl basically dismissed Mullen and Hudspeth when they approached him with advice on how to slow Houston down. That's my main problem with older DCs considering we have a young, offensive minded head coach. Some guys think they have it all figured out and don't need a 37 year old offensive coach to help them. I'm willing to bet Diaz would love to learn about the spread offense from Mullen

The general consensus was that most were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and wait and see, but were very unexcited about the hire. Most were very concerned about his terrible defenses at Texas A&M.

I was talking about the tv annoucers and media in general. I don't think anybody on this board was really excited about getting Torbush.

With his dad's connections to Miami, maybe we could be so fortunate that the family adopt a wide receiver off a street corner.

makes him sound interesting enough and I envision all sorts of upside as in: Miami, even with Dexter on the loose, they have more bif high schools than in all of Ms., so great base for recruiting. ESPN, yes, good publicity does help image and I think he would add to the growing "smart young coach" image that Mullen is developing just after one season.
