They have an idiot as a head coach and no leadership.

Their defense gets shredded every game and their offensive line is having problems. They would be better with Petrino for sure, but they wouldn't be top 10 with this defense.

Their defense was going to be a problem regardless. But Petrino was a good coach. Smith is an awful coach.

I did think they were a little overrated in the preseason. I was thinking more like 7-8 wins instead of 10-11 wins like their fans were so sure of. But man, I don't think anyone expected them to be this bad.

I think the AD is "resetting expectations" by hiring John L. as interim. They threw the towel in on this season with that decision before it even started. I halfway wonder if this was intentional to help transition to a future without an elite type coach of Petrinos stature. This would give the next coach a fighting chance with the fans if he can't live up to what Petrino did while he was at Arkansas. In other words sacrifice a short loss for long term gains.

well given the timing, there was absolutely no way they'd attract any kind of decent HC option or even a high end coordinator with future aspirations. now i guess they could have have maybe pursued an out of work ex-HC, but i think they would prefer to have had a full coaching search instead of committing to whatever they could lure in like april or may of the offseason.

if there's anything we've learned this season, it's the importance of good coaching. talent alone isn't enough, in the NFL (saints) or CFB (ark).

I go against typical football thinking on this one......

I think Arkansas has pretty good talent, but with Petrino, they are probably top of the conference. Maybe not a 10-11 win team with close. The guy is just that good. He's better than Saban. He turns average players into above average players.

Could be. And in hindsight, maybe a good decision......

....but I think to do something like that take giant brass balls. Mainly because the AD's handling of that situation is going to reflect on him. To do that for the greater good of Arkansas....hmmm....risky. I personally think at the time that was all they could do, and that delusional bunch really thought it more that they were good instead of Petrino just being that good.

In hindsight they should have just promoted from within, and let Petrino the brother run the show for one year.

In the end, it's pretty easy if you possess common sense.....

1 - They weren't as talented as they thought.
2 - Petrino was a hell of a coach and obviously under appreciated.
3 - They screwed up and lost to a 'mid-major' as so many teams are prone to do.

#3 sends you in a tailspin that most teams never fully recover from. Given #1 and #2, pretty easy to see why a fanbase and program, which was already one of the most delusional around, would fall apart. Ask Croom and Nutt how losing those games affects their season. About the only team I can think of recently that did recover was Virginia Tech when they lost to James Madison.

Horseshit, they hired Smith to win and

Had every expectation that he would. Smiths personal life is the dumpster fire that is the basis of what has happened on the field. There is a huge vacuum in leadership which no one has stepped forward to fill so far.

I'll have to call ******** on this. They hired Smith to WIN, and win now. He is a world class fail, and his 17ing personal bankruptcy is more evidence of it. They have talent but no leadership. Circa 2001 MSU.

To be better than Saban he would need to beat him in head to head matches atleast once. Has he done that? Nick Saban has 3 NC. Petrino has zero.

Disagree.......

You're leaving off a big pieces to the puzzle: Potential of the programs, proximity to talent, etc. If Bobby Petrino was coaching at Alabama he'd have just as many titles as Saban. Saban probably would not have been as successful at Arkansas at Bobby P.
