OK, somebody explain the concept of the "jump pass" to me...

...Is this what Lee was supposed to do?

Because Lee most definitely did not jump at all. Also, noted on the replay that ANOTHER way that play succeeds is that if we run the play action to Dixon off left tackle. Jones had to come all the way across the screen. If the fake had been run in his direction, Jones stays put and we win.

comments after the game...

"<span class="storybody">It's a jump pass, Tyson (Lee) is supposed to jump up and throw it. And we just didn't get him jumping high enough and their kid made a heck of a play to tip the ball. We had discussed that, we had the play-order called kind of before we even got to it."

The way we used to run it was for the QB to be under center, take about a 2 step drop almost as if it was going to be a handoff or a play action, and then dumping it to the TE just over the LB's.. Depending on how close the LB's were he may or may not have had to jump. It looked about the same as what we saw Sat. sans the deflection ;(

The Tebows of the world execute close to perfect. The Tyson Lee's get it half right and thus screw it up. The play CALL was awesome, so was the pitch play that Lee screwed up.

If the fake had been run off left tackle, Jones wouldn't have been in position to make the play. However, if Chad Jones had bit on the fake and tackled Dixon he wouldn't have been in position either. Just a great read and react on Jones' part.

to run the QB draw on the goal line. Anyone? Anyone?

Not seeing any hands, I'm gonna go ahead and say that the vid is not exactly the same.

...it looked like Tyson saw Green and just fired it in there. The other obvious difference is that Tebow is in the shotgun and fakes like he is going to run it in. Tyson could've jumped backwards I suppose.

...which is why I was asking. Tyson didn't jump at all. How do you execute that going backwards?

It seems to me, you've got to roll him out next time. Fake the dive, roll him out and let him either toss it to Green who's moving with him or run it in. But that play works as is 99 times out of 100. F@CK!!!!

The video is exactly the same. There's a wide 17ing open receiver in the end zone and all the QB needs to do is get some height on the pass to get the TD.

Lee totally screwed up those last two plays. Not only did he not jump, he had his weight back on his right leg too much, flat-footed, just awful. I would just never have had Lee play that much of an important role in those two plays. Great calls, just not in the hands of Lee to pull them off.

...in fact, this is how I call it:

1st down. Same play as called.
2nd down. Same play as called, down to the 4 inch line.
3rd down. Dixon jumps over the top.
4th down (if necessary). Play action rollout like you described.

Man, it still really hurts.

I said the same thing about the pass play. I like the call on third, because I think the defense is less likely to expect the pass on third down. I mean all you have to do is fake to the left and roll Tyson out the right and release Green to the right as well. That play always works. There is always the one guy that is in position (#3 for LSU Saturday) but he has to choose to either go after the QB or guard the TE. Whichever he chooses, you do the opposite and its a touchdown. I think if you wait until fourth down, the defense is more likely to expect that.
