..is the Mullen hire a "homerun?"

I would say he is at least a game winning double in the bottom of the ninth.

I could be totally wrong, but Urban Meyer ran the show in Florida. With Wilson, it was his offense. Stoops' side of the ball is defense so I wanted Wilson, who finished with the 3rd ranked offense in the nation at Northfreakingwestern. Think about that. Northwestern. I guess we could have done worse, but I felt Wilson was the stronger of the two candidates. Someone please talk me into believing we made the right hire. Please.

You'll have to get someone else to **** on this hire.

If nothing else, chew on this: Croom has been replaced by someone who has a pulse.

If Russell walks, he is a called third strike. If he comes, perhaps an extra base hit.

to soon to tell if homerun or not, but has been with Urban Meyer at everyone of his stops, Bowling Green and Utah and UF. You would have to think some of that genius and energy have rubbed off on the guy by now...

I wanted an existing head coach. I think this is a mistake. But I also think it may have been the best we could do, considering our last 10 years of football.

...Mullen is a glass 1/2 full hire:

1) He's not Dooley.

2) He's not Croom.

3) He's coming from a program that is a college football powerhouse.

4) His resume will appeal to our top recruit, Tyler Russell.

Mullen is not a homerun, but he's not a can of corn either.

I hope he does well but I'm 86ing season tickets till he can prove to me he can win.

Not sold at all. Byrne could have done better. He obviuosly didnt make the sell. I grade him and the hire a C-.

...he is not a Head Coach headliner, but he is a brilliant offensive mind and great QB coach. I think he holds on to almost all our existing recruits, and brings in a few from Florida. There may be 4-5 kids who wanted to go play for him at Florida, but UF may not have had room. Well, we do!

But, he is a good solid hire. A home run would be someone with an exceptional record as a head coach.

Mullen is not to football like Cohen was to baseball. But, we are far more capable of hitting a home run with a baseball hire than we are a football hire. One would presume our baseball coach can be among the best paid in the nation, if not the highest paid in the nation. We can pay very well, but we cannot make our football coach the highest paid one in the nation. We can make him top 20, though.

Hiring Petersen would have been a Cohen-type homerun, but it didn't happen.

Mullen is a solid hire, but less than a HR.

we were all hating our lives thinking that all we were going to get in the realm of changes was maybe Woody getting fired... now this:

Current job: Florida offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (since 2005)
Age: 36
Previous stops
• 2003-04: Utah quarterbacks coach
• 2001-02: Bowling Green quarterbacks coach
• 1999-00: Notre Dame graduate assistant offense
• 1998: Syracuse graduate assistant offense
• 1996-97: Columbia receivers coach
• 1994-95: Wagner receivers coach
Notable: Florida ranks first in the SEC, third in nation in scoring offense. … Gators also ranked first in SEC, third in nation in scoring in 2007. … Florida was only team in 2007 to run for at least on TD and pass for at least one TD in every game. … QB Tim Tebow won the 2007 Heisman
I just don't understand it. We don't have Dooley we have a guy that is playing for the crystal ball. If you think Byrne 17'd this up, imagine what ole LT would have done in the same position.

I'm not saying all of our problems are solved, but this is actually something MState fans can be excited about. Byrne is doing things right in my opinion.

if Byrne gets a base hit, this game is at least tied.

The 3-1 pitch is a drive deep to left, WAAAAAYYYYY BACK, IT IS GONE!!!!!! IT IS GONE !!!!!!!!

A Grand Slam for Byrne !!!
A Grand Slam for Byrne !!!

Look at it this way. He's been the QB coach to one Heisman winner (Tebow) and one Heisman runner-up (Alex Smith). He's directing the offense in the National Championship game for the second time in 3 years. Home run? Maybe not, but it's a hell of a lot better than LT would have or could have done. I think it's a good hire. It should solidify Tyler Russell's committment and I'm pumped.

Thanks Greg!

LT would have been chasing Dooley and talking about being in the black.

You have no idea how much input this guy has in the offense. How do you know Urban runs the show?

Other reasons you can rest easy
1) This guy actually has SEC experience. Sorry that he only put up 42 points a game compared to Wilson. Wilson faced much softer defenses week in and week out.

2) Mullen already has a grip on recruiting in this region. Hell, we could live off of Florida leftovers.

3) He has a proven track record of developing quarterbacks. Look at the transformation on Alex Smith at Utah. Chris Leak was a different player his senior year. Tebow has shown a HUGE improvement in his passing game.

4) Who's to say the rumors of Wilson not being a recruiter weren't true?

I am 100% behing this hire. This is the first time we've ever hired a young, energetic coach w/ this type of background. I trust Byrne and there had to be reasons that this was his man(even after Petersen).

If we had to go the coordinator route then he was second to Wilson in my book. I'm ok with the hire but not as excited as I had hoped. Mullen was in my top 6 choices and I'm very grateful LT had nothing to do with this search.

are Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, or Pete Carroll.

It's good to see that we have a new village idiot to make fun of now that coach34 is officially back on the MSU bandwagon.
