I don't have a problem at all with Bryan. As Mississippi sheriffs go, he's probably one of the best. In terms of major crimes, his office is pretty good at extracting information from a wide variety of sources. He knows which buttons to push. Thus, if Cowbells is causing him problems, then I'll be on his side - as much as I would hate to see it go. But, like I said before, if Starkville would legalize Sunday sales, then Bryan's problems would go away.

I'm saying the Sheriff' Office is probably forced to spend too much time and money on one bar. If they have to answer a call at the Highlands with two cars, which would be the norm, then that may cause a problem if something happens on the other side of the county.

If they make 10 DUI arrests at a Sunday night roadblock outside of Cowbells, that means 10 people were stupid enough to drive drunk through the roadblock. Thus, the degree to which there is a drunk driving problem because of Cowbells is backed up by specific facts.

Is it the best sports bar ever? No. Is is the best sports bar in Starkville that you actually have the option to buy a beer and watch multiple football games on a Sunday? Yes. I think that merits it staying open.

I've been there twice. The first time, I arrived at 8:50 PM and was told the kitchen closed at 10 so we couldn't order. The second time, a huge brawl erupted and the staff did nothing to kick out the offenders. They let people go outside and fight, then come back in to the place still bleeding. I think a customer had to call the cops to end it. It was ridiculous. Whoever runs that place has no clue what he is doing.

I've lived away from Starkville since '95. I've visited for games but did not get around town very much. Can someone enlighten me on what Cowbells is? or what it was 15 years ago?

Hopefully the golf course you mention shutting down is not the MSU course.

There would be this same problem if they put up roadblocks outside of any bar in Starkville. Cowbells is not the cause of drunk driving. Shutting down the place is not going to fix the drunk driving problem. The problem is that too many dumbasses drive drunk anyway. The problem is that cowbells has been singled out by putting roadblocks up there more than they do outside of other bars.

The "facts" that you talk about are not only in the highlands. This is just an attack on alcohol sales in the county and the department just finding a reason to shut the place down.

Ok, so lets remove cowbells from the conversation....First, because of the mutliple owners/deals over the last several years, the land development and the golf course are seperate, different people entirely. Cowbells is in fact a 3rd group of seperate owners. If the status is removed, the golf course would never be bought. Who would own a golf course that couldn't sell beer on Sunday? So now, the golf course becomes pasture and then what happens to the property value and look of the joint. At least WITH the status there's a chance that somebody may buy the course and fix it up. This in turn would put pressure on the home owners assoc/ developers to fix the roads. A co-op deal could be formed between the 2 for ground maintenance and eventually it would be better than it currently is. If the status is lost, it becomes a section 8 farm....Which is better for our image and the county and surrounding property? Clearly the status needs to be kept and Dolph needs to ask the county to up his patrol budget....

That isn't an option in very many counties right now. Most counties tax revenues are down due to the economy (sales tax, tags on new vehicles, etc.).

Bryan has been around way too long to get laughed out of a meeting for asking for a budget increase during economic crisis.

at Cowbells. the tax rate is 7% there and the State keeps it all. The county DOES however receive property and inventory taxes. that in itself is reason enough to leave it be.

Dolph has no say in revoking the status. Now that they have it, only the Mississippi State Legislature can take that resort status away. Their are new people in charge of the homeowners' association now, and supposedly some big changes are on the way. We shall see...
