He was cleared academically, but as far as I know that was never supposed to be an issue, just a formality of having his paperwork finalized. Sidney's major issue is his amateur status...which the NCAA has yet to rule on.

I'd like to hear from somebody close to the bb team what their feeling is regarding RS possibly coming in. It could be a pretty incredible season or two.

I don't really understand that. What would make someone academically ineligible? Can the NCAA keep someone from going to school? Can someone explain their power regarding that?

Honestly I never knew. I dont see how anyone can be stopped from going to school. I'm not referring to playing sports. I understand the not being able to play college sports again, but can they keep you from attending classes and getting a degree because you played professional sports at one point.

...but they can keep the school from giving you an athletic scholarship and/or play with the team.

Excuse me for not knowing a rule about college sports. I bow down to you Oh great one, Shmuley.

I thought that the NCAA could only keep you from playing (or getting a scholarship To play obviously). I just thought that was the only "clearance" you needed. A clearance to play sports. I just didn't understand why there are 2 clearances.

That's because for most people it's not an issue. There was some issue a few years back about a football player, I think for Utah or someone like that, who had spent time professionally as a skier before wanting to play college football. His amateur status was called into question, and I can't remember the ruling.

For most, the amateur status part is a rubber stamp, and it's all about the academic clearance.

That was Jeremy Bloom at Colorado. I am almost certain he played for a while, then the NCAA decided he was not an amateur and ruled him ineligible. But dude could play some football.

I think I understand where he coming from. I have the same question. Now that the NCAA has cleared Sidney academically but not approved his amateur status, does that mean MSU can offer him an athletic scholarship or does he have to pay his tuition from other sources?

I don't know if that is factional. Josh Booty played professional baseball from 1994 to 1998 in the Marlins organization. He made about 1,1 million dollars. He entered LSU in 1999 and played football for two years.

I think the armature rule only applies to the sport you are going to play.

I think that's inaccurate but am I happily wrong?

If I had to make a bet I would bet that he plays college basketball next year. I feel that NCAA is a bunch of dick heads who does bull crap like this to justify their positions. Really how long does it take to look into something like this? It is what it is. Make your ruling and move on. Why keep thousands of fans waiting and especially the student and his family waiting? Like I said they are a bunch of dick heads. I bet if he was going to play for Duke or North Carolina his *** would have already been cleared.

His only mistake was signing with Miss State. Not that State is a bad school it is just the fact that the NCAA screws with the smaller schools in order so they would not have to mess with the big programs but still justify their jobs.

You are right on that, and there have been plenty of athletes come back to college football after a failed pro baseball career. Chris Weinke was one of them I'm pretty sure as well.

I did remember the Jeremy Bloom case, and for whatever reason they called his amateur status into question. I think he may have been skiing professionally in the off-season or something like that. Can't remember. Either way, I know it's not common to hear amateur status come into question, but it can obviously hold you up. I still stand by the idea that I think the NCAA will stall and stall on Sidney until after the season starts, hoping he'll just drop out and leave. If he sticks it out, I think they'll clear his amateur status in November of December, prior to SEC play.

Just my guess based on the way I've watched the NCAA operate. They're stalling right now hoping Sidney will just go away. I don't think they'll prove anything though, and they'll eventually have to cave. The good news for MSU is that it really can't hurt you. If he isn't cleared, he just doesn't play. If he is cleared, he plays and can help you.

it was the endorsements/sponsors coming in that called his amateur status to be in question.

I do remember that going on and don't remember the details. Maybe it was he was doing it while playing college football? I could see how that would be a conflict.

I hope Dixon after playing baseball ends up back in college playing football one day.

He had sponsors paying him, but his argument was that Olympic atheletes have to have sponsors to be able to afford the trip to the Olympics in the first place, or something like that.

And that's similar to the problem with Sidney. The relationship with Reebok I believe is what's called into question. If Reebok can be seen almost like a sponsor, then the amateur status won't be given.

I doubt they find anything, but like I said, I think they'll delay and force him to miss some games first to see if he'll just give up and sit out the season.

NCAA wouldn't let him keep receiving them and he needed them to fund his ski training and competition.
