Rebs are coming together ok early in the season, but we've seen this before. There is nothing more deceptive than preseason (pre-SEC) basketball.

We'll see. We've got a long way to go simply because we have so many players that can play, and we have to establish roles and a rotation. That said, we look to be further along than I expected at this point, especially in the front court.

In particular, our inside defense has looked a lot better than I expected. Buckner is a shot blocking machine, and he'll get better. I expect him to be a different player by SEC play. Cranston looks much improved as well. I've also been impressed with our offensive rebounding. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we penetrate a whole lot, forcing the defense out of position, which opens lanes for the offensive rebounds.

Two things I do know are that we're going to be able to get to the bucket against just about anyone, and our defense overall should be fairly tough given the length and athleticism we have this year. The announcers made a good point during our game saying that we have the ability to switch on most picks without ending up in a bad mismatch because the majority of the guys we run out there, outside of Warren and Gaskins, are in the 6-5 to 6-9 range with athleticism. It's harder to break down a defense when you can't create mismatches with the pick and roll game. Instead of having to fight through picks, which can create open looks, we can just switch in most cases. I'm anxious to see how it all plays out, but I like our chances this year.

We'll find out more if we can beat KSU and then take out Dayton or Villanova.

the status of our program in 1996 to what it was in 1998?

95-96 Record - 26-8 FINAL FOUR

96-97 Record - 12-19
97-98 Record - 15-15

Son, we were on a roll.

Indiana was 6-25 last year. That is a level of suck we have not seen since Richard Williams first year at MSU. They are freaking atrocious. In today's basketball the names don't mean what they used to. Look at teams like Dayton and Butler. They may not have the name recognition but they would beat the hell out of teams with name status like Indiana, DePaul, and St.Johns.

that if Ole Miss is teetering on a NCAA at-large, under Good Wins on their resume, it will show Indiana.

I could be wrong.

It just seems like the RPI is almost exclusively what the committee looks at. Put this way, if Ohio State or any Big 10 school is on the bubble then I don't think a couple of wins over Indiana will mean anything. It just looks like a big win because Ole Miss never plays Indiana.

just like a win over a UCLA, even though they look to be way down, will look good for us if we can pull it off.

Indiana is one of those teams that will probably be a lot better come conference play. They are real young, primarily freshmen and sophomores, and their best player was sitting out a transfer year last year. They will probably still struggle to get in NIT contention because they are just too young, but they won't be a 6-25 team again. Better than last year, but I still don't think we'll get credit for that being a quality win.

In the selection committee's eyes, when they eyeball a non-conference schedule though, we may get an unconscious bonus point for the name recognition, but that's about it. The bigger games are tonight against KSU and on Sunday against Villanova or Dayton depending on who wins and loses.

Those 2 games will be against teams that will likely be in the NCAA mix at the end of the year.

Indiana is the least atheltic team in that entire tournament. No knock on OM, because they did to them what they should have. But that is just a matchup nightmare for IU going up against OM and probably any other team in the tournament. IU has a few good players, but they are extrememly young.

a team that had just been to a Sweet 16 and then a FF just 2 years ago, or the losing one Kennedy took over?

Being able to tell recruits- "I know you saw us in the Final Four just two years ago against Syracuse. And if we get you, we'll be right back there again. Now, take these Bryan hotdogs" is a huge advantage.

They know what a win over Indiana (or DePaul) is really worth this year. It'll look good to the very casual fan, but not to anyone who really knows anything about college basketball.

I am not saying Indiana is even a good team. I am saying ESPN - if they show Ole Miss's tournament resume - will have Indiana as a good win.
