I saw a pic of the Ole Miss Football 18-wheeler trailer. On the side, it says "3 National Championships, 6 SEC Championships" Where did those come from?

As has been discussed many times before, the national championships are up for debate.

I say given the history of polls and how all that came about, if you can claim them claim them. Who cares where they came from?

If you've ever read up on the history of polls in college football, it's interesting to see how many there were and how they were put together originally. It's amazing you could put any faith in any of them.

Even today, with the internet and so many games on TV, the actual voters in the "major" polls rarely get to see more than a few teams actually play full games, yet we pretend they have some sort of pulse on what's going on. You have coaches and media members who typically see one game a week in full. For the rest, all they get are snippets and highlight reels.

It's just another reason why I think a playoff is so necessary in college football. The system is so inefficient.

I bet in the last 50 years, there must have been about 350 national championships in football.

I agree. Regardless of how debatable it is, if that was Mississippi State in that situation, I'd be claiming them. Yes, I agree the system is so far from perfect now, but it's better from what it was way back when.

From CFB Data Warehouse: You have 215 major titles won from 1869-2010 (142 seasons), which is an average of just over 1.5 per year on average.

CFB Data Warehouse counts two of our titles (1960 and 1962) as being awarded by what they consider "major" polls.

If you count the ones each school claims for themselves, that number jumps to only 237 or 1.67 titles claimed per year on average. Obviously, in this list, we claim all 3 (1959, 1960, and 1962).

If you count the polls the NCAA considers "consensus polls", you have 79 champions awarded since 1950 (61 seasons), which is about 1.3 champions per year on average. If you use that measure, we have one consensus title (1960). Minnesota also won consensus titles in 1960.

Exactly but the AP poll has always been there and that used to be what determined the national champion. And of course ya'll never finished number 1 in the AP poll. You guys actually finished 4 in the AP and 1 in some no name poll and claimed a national championship. Comical if you ask me.

Notice the names of the polls that appear next to UM's name and there's an AP poll national championship declaration by the teams that actually won it.

The AP has not always been THE poll.

There have been multiple major polls over the years, which is why it's not cut and dried.

At this point in time, the AP is not considered THE major poll. The BCS is the major poll, and the AP no longer plays a role in that even.

It's always changing. If you look at that list you put up, the polls in bold are the ones that were considered major or consensus at the time.

As I said in the other post, if there isn't a playoff, and there are multiple polls out there, I say claim a national title if a poll gives it to you. You would too if your school had any claims.

computedby math algorithms, some of which werenot even designed untilmany many years later.

Interestingly, Kentucky officially claims a footballNational Championship for 1950--it was awardedin the 1990's by Sagarin and his computer program.

Some other examples of computer polls picking national champions:

This year, the Whitlock computer poll picked Stanford #1 and Auburn #4, the Round Robin Win computer poll picked Oregon #1 and Auburn #3, and Talisman Red computer poll picked Stanford #1 and Auburn #3.

Wow--the Annar computer poll picked Boise State #1, TCU #2, Ohio State #3, and Auburn #4.

Hell, the University of Minnesota has 6 national championships. There is one problem. The last one was in 1960. No one cares about stuff you did 50 years ago. Especially imaginary stuff you did 50 years ago.
