I agree. Regardless of how debatable it is, if that was Mississippi State in that situation, I'd be claiming them. Yes, I agree the system is so far from perfect now, but it's better from what it was way back when.RebelBruiser said:dawgstudent said:As has been discussed many times before, the national championships are up for debate.
I say given the history of polls and how all that came about, if you can claim them claim them. Who cares where they came from?
Exactly but the AP poll has always been there and that used to be what determined the national champion. And of course ya'll never finished number 1 in the AP poll. You guys actually finished 4 in the AP and 1 in some no name poll and claimed a national championship. Comical if you ask me.RebelBruiser said:dawgstudent said:As has been discussed many times before, the national championships are up for debate.

If you've ever read up on the history of polls in college football, it's interesting to see how many there were and how they were put together originally. It's amazing you could put any faith in any of them.
Even today, with the internet and so many games on TV, the actual voters in the "major" polls rarely get to see more than a few teams actually play full games, yet we pretend they have some sort of pulse on what's going on. You have coaches and media members who typically see one game a week in full. For the rest, all they get are snippets and highlight reels.
It's just another reason why I think a playoff is so necessary in college football. The system is so inefficient.
The AP and UPI were the twoMAJOR polls that everyone took seriously back then. What do you think about that "2003 SEC Western Division Champions" sign on the side of yalls damn stadium. Who did yall play in Atlanta that year??The AP has not always been THE poll.
There have been multiple major polls over the years, which is why it's not cut and dried.
