Punt hit the ground, Holliday starting waving his arms like a baseball umpire calling safe but then picked the ball up and ran it back for a TD. They blew the play dead when he picked it up.

Watch the replay. Lionel Breaux was in a spot to LEVEL Holiday, but he pulled back and looked for the ball bouncing along the ground after he was waved off. Hell, even the ref called the play dead....

and it wasn't like the ball was not moving. That's a stupid rule but it's a rule nonetheless.

LSU's guy didn't, despite what the SEC official in the booth bullshitted Gary Danielson.

That said, that play didn't affect the outcome of the game. Mississippi's QB and D-line were both dominant.

Watching the game, I said our guy called for a fair catch. That said, if one sideways-rotation of one arm signals a fair catch, then three to four full lateral extension and retraction of the arms should also signal a fair catch. Both were sort of gray, but both were definitely fair catches that I'd call, if I were a ref.. Breaux was set to destroy Holiday if he didn't wave off. He stopped, turned around and chased the ball... all b/c Holiday signaled the fair catch.

There is a big difference between signaling fair catch by waving your hand above your head and waving your players out of the way, keeping your hands beneath your shoulders.

Those are two totally separate signals. It made no difference in the game, but Holiday did not call a fair catch.

Very true, so if he called fair catch where was the flag for three LSU defenders attempting to tackle him after the fair catch? He started running after they touched him and the refs never stopped the play.

that SEC officials are <17>in retarded.

But that doesn't change the fact that OM called a fair catch and LSU did not. Like I said, it doesn't matter. You won, Congrats.

I can't for the life of me figure out why you even give a **** about what an opposing team's fans think about a questionable call.

First of all, Breaux went after the ball because it hit the ground and he was going after it to down it. That's what you do as a kicking team player when the punt hits the ground. Second, to signal fair catch you have to wave your hand ABOVE YOUR HEAD. In the history of football, waving your players off of a put that had already hit the ground with your arms raised no higer than your chest has never been interpreted as attempting to make a fair catch signal until today. </p>

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Of course he ran before they started trying to tackle him. Watch for yourself when the game is replayed tomorrow.

after getting someone else's opinion:

Apparently, an invalid fair catch signal does not warrant the same protection that a valid fair catch signal does. That was a half-*** fair catch signal, it warranted half-*** protection.

Well we still beat the **** out of them regardless. With the way snead played, lsu didn't have a chance. We could have easily scored again at the end. That play wouldn't have changed anything

I did watch it hence the reply. He was moving to the left so he could catch it, as soon as he touched the ball an lsu player missed the tackle then two more missed immediately after. Not a single lsu player pulled off on the play. Not that it matters because we whipped that *** anyway.

lol, well this argument is dumb as **** anyway. It doesn't matter if we did or did not call a fair catch and if the lsu players should have been flagged for this hit or if the lsu play should have been whistled dead for Holliday (If it hadn't I don't think he scores) we still would have won. good win today for State, nothing like seeing the piglets lose.

It obviously didn't matter, but the only reason Holliday was able to take that punt back for a TD is because our coverage team all stopped on the whistle. He would've made some return yardage if they hadn't blown the whistle, but he wouldn't have taken it back. Off course Danielson acted like it was taking a TD away from LSU. Had they not blown the whistle, he may have picked up 10 or so yards, and their offense would've stalled out and punted anyway.

so inconsistently, out of the blue, when they feel like it....

For players, coaches, fans, that's the frustrating aspect of the games.

You never know what or when the refs are going to enforce a rule. The games would be much cleaner if only the refs would be consistent in their actions.

And these threads wouild be much shorter if only the posters knew the (acual) rules they were debating.

but most people don't know about it since the refs only call it about half the time. Either always call something, or never.
