I don't know how any fan of any school could just not care at all about their mascot like so many of these Rebels (or Bruins - may as well go ahead and get used to calling them that) claim.
The mascot has less of an effect on my gameday than the cheerleaders do, and about the only affect they have is that I enjoy seeing them around on gameday before and after the game. When I'm at the game, they might as well be hanging out in the locker room for all I care. I don't even notice them being there other than seeing some synchronized motion on occasion out of the corner of my eye.
If you're into Bully more than that, I guess that's your perrogative.
If you changed your mascot to a Lion, would it really affect your status as a fan? What exactly would it change for you as a fan? Would you all of a sudden get less enjoyment coming back to games to see friends and family? Would you get less enjoyment when you spring an upset on Alabama? If only Bully were there, would it make your day more complete? I was mad when they took away Col. Reb at first. I was in college and got mad because it was the cool thing to do. When you're 20, you think it's cool to try to stick it to the man over something. When I grew up a little bit, I thought about how much I really cared, and I didn't. When I looked back, were gamedays in 2002 different than gamedays in 2003 for me? Did I enjoy the games less? Did I even notice the difference in the gameday experience without a mascot as compared to with one? The answer is it was no different, so why should it matter to me. I thought about it, and the last time a mascot had had any affect on my gameday experience was when I was a kid.
That's why I have the stance I have now. Obviously, that's not the case for all of our fans, but I do think that if a mascot is that important to your gameday experience, you have to be a little bit juvenile. You probably wouldn't even notice if Bully was sick and didn't show up for the Alabama game in a couple weeks.
Live mascots are another thing altogether though. I think those are cool. Not sure why, but I've always liked live mascots. That's a completely different animal (no pun intended).
