I figured that, but to keep a sport based solely on one countries likeness of it?
Population weight aside, I'm thinking baseball may be the most (or possibly second most to soccer) popular sport in Latin America.
I guess I just don't see ping pong as a sport on an Olympic level, but that could be said for a few more things as well.

MLB won't suspend their season to allow the best players from every country to participate. IOC figures they won't waste their money on it if the competition isn't among the best. Softball got lumped in as the "women's baseball" since most sports in the Olympics are contested that way.
