so far, pretty impressive.

some kind of witchcraft suspended an 11 year old girl 150 feet in the air (heavy test line is my guess) and large....tracts....of LAND were also suspended above whatever playing surface that is.

as i type, there was a snowflake malfunction. five giant lighted snowflakes were supposed to morph into the olympic rings, however, one malfunctioned and remained a snowflake. the set engineer's family is probably being ground into dog food as you read this.

anywho, a few thoughts on the opening video....russia was showing clips of their past trying to project an image of their strength....one of them was of some pipe frame helicopter and another was a rover on the moon. makes me pretty proud to be 'merican. we see your pipe helicopter and moon rover and raise you the 17 wright brothers and an interplanetary rover with some dudes jumping on the moon for extra measure.

all that said, its still a pretty impressive ordeal. for your familys sake, dont screw up. they busted out the glowing red, white, and blue parkas....this gonna be good.

I'm still waiting for Ivan Drago to enter the stadium.

LOL, exact same thought I had.

How many of you started singing along to the Russian National Anthem from watching that movie so many times? Tell the truth...

I know we are supposed to watch this and be in awe of the show but I still can't shake the past. When we were kids we always fought the Russians with our GI Joes, Rocky kicked a Russian's *** and made him hate the Russian government in the process, our most hated wrassler never could take the title from Hulk Hogan, and Jed and Matt died in Red Dawn with the rest of the Wolverines.

Color me unimpressed with the glorification of their history.

ETA: I am still amazed that the Winter Olympics are being held in a place where it will be in the 50s every day and won't go below freezing at night. Crazy.

I thought of The Hunt for Red October, where the Russian crew sang the National Anthem as the submarine descended.

It's just interesting to me. Maybe because I don't fully understand alot of it. Guess that's the thing about cultures...

Here's an interesting event that is shockingly rarely talked about. Had this guy reacted differently, I think it's pretty safe to say a whole helluva lot of us wouldn't be here right now...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasili_Arkhipov

I know what you mean. All their governmental agencies had tons of guns and ammo, they investigated everyone who had a different viewpoint other that the approved one, they eavesdropped on everyone's conversations, tapped phone conversations, and ... no, wait.
