Nice catch BKH. The guy who hates participation awards is making an argument to make medal count scoring basically a participation award. Wish I had caught that when I made my participation award comment. Oh well, I'm done debating this wafflefry if that's the case.

Nice shot. I could point out there is no real contradiction between labeling a cyclist who seemed content to finish fourth part of a 'participation generation ' and saying that a bronze medal should be valued more than 1/3 of a gold. But, in the spirit of the games, I'll just award you a clean hit.
She wasn't content in finishing fourth. Someone needs to learn science. Drafting, making a streamline. The pack of three behind her were faster than she was because of this. She expended her energy going it alone, where as the pack behind her worked as a team and caught up to her.

There's a reason that in the individual time trial, drafting and making a slipstream isn't allowed. You must let the faster rider pass, because slipstreaming causes faster times.

Because of this, she knew she was beaten. When they went around her at the end, she was far enough ahead of the second pack, she coasted in because she wasn't going to finish any better or any worse.

The USA was bested that day. If you listened to the announcers, they were concerned about it far before it happened because she was a climbing specialist on flat ground, and she was by herself. But if it makes you feel better, go ahead and convince yourself she was just happy to be there.

US with another gold this morning. Women's bike time trial. Three straight for her. Old Gal just fell over when she crossed the finish line and realized she won. Thought they were gonna have to put her down.
Kristin Armstrong. She won her 3rd consecutive gold medal in the women's time trial cycling event. 43 years old young.

Another fine showing by a US cyclist. Way to go, girl!

So far, there's only been one real disappointment (unless I missed an event): Williams Sisters.. I heard reports that they didn't even want to be here. Fine, if that's the case, then let someone else go. I have to imagine two other top female Tennis players would fair MUCH better than a lazy Serena Williams..

Other than that, it's been lights out. So many dominant squads.. Men's Swimming, basketball, Volleyball.. Women's Gymnastics and volleyball. Two of the best individual athletes in the Olympics in Ledecky and Phelps.. We have almost 50% more medals than #2... and China isn't gonna set the world on fire in Track and Field..

Put a fork in these Olympics.. they done.

Even the boxers have faired way better than expected, maybe even get a few medals. The Hernandez kid beat the #2 seed Russian, kid is 19 years old and just getting started. Now the girl Claressa Shields (I think) is the favorite to win gold, she did so in 2012. She is a bad girl from Flint, MI.

Paul George just got T'd up -

Hope our guys pick it up soon.

Cuz had quick fouls in last game too that held him back. They're picking on him! You're not biased.

The whole team USA got jobbed that game and still won. AUS played dirty as hell. Bogut especially.

Edit to add that they were relying way too much on the 3, but that doesn't change the way AUS played.

First it's a rotting corpse washing up on the beach, then it's so cold women's beach volleyball players have to wear long sleeves and pants.

Fapping is down in these Olympics. Like 20%. The average is only 9 times a day which is a significant decline from four years ago.

Been waiting for days for USA vs. Suisse. Seems like if it's too cold for swim suits, it's obviously too cold to play and the match should be postponed.

If I could be xenophobic for a minute...

Screw FIBA.

Their rules are dumb. You shouldn't be allowed to touch the ball while it's on the rim. That's goaltending, period. I go back to a shot in the 2nd quarter where Draymond would have had a three trickle in but an Aussie guy whacked it off the rim. Completely legal, completely stupid.

Even stupider: The three referees today were from Germany, Greece and Spain. I get that this is done to prevent corruption like the 1972 outright rogering our guys took vs. USSR. I get that. I'm sure they all speak the language of basketball, but they can't be as effective at communicating with the players, coaches and each other as a crew of referees ought to be.

The end result today was a very unevenly officiated game that reminded me of a random Tuesday night in the SEC West. Lots of stuff got missed on both sides. They called everything on the bigs, nothing on anybody else.

As for the game...really fun stuff. Gotta trust in Carmelo Anthony. He's the old man on the team and the greatest international basketball player of all time. If he played in Europe, he'd have a Pistol Pete season. Need to get Durant going again, need for guys to get more confidence in their jumpers, specifically Durant, need to have it so where we don't have to play Lowry so much.

Klay Thompson looks tired more than anything. But I thought he did a good job guarding Patty Mills down the stretch.

The Aussies were good and tough and the stuff they ran was outstanding. Wouldn't have minded seeing a little zone, seeing as how they were able to backdoor the crap out of us on a few switches. By far the 2nd best team I've seen and I'll be shocked if that doesn't end up being the gold medal game. I don't even know who else can hang. Maybe Lithuania? We'll need the bigs in that game for sure. Don't think the ultra small lineup that put today's game away will be as effective against Lithuania.

If you saw the pictures I posted on page 3 of this thread you will realize how PO'ed I am about the long shirts and pants. My favorite beach volleyball player for at least 5 days is way overdressed.

Coolest thing about the olympics is that for all the Greek deity physiques, most everyone is average looking in the face. Really sells the illusion that if the average joe just trained 26 hours a day 8 days a week for their entire life, they could amount to something.

Ledecky blowing past the Aussie anchor had me thinking of the announcer call of Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont. Moving like a tremendous machine.

What is the format(medals) for the golf tournament that begins tomorrow? Individual or individual and team scores?

Individual. It's basically the same as any other tournament except I think they have a playoff if there's ties for 2nd and 3rd.

OK, we got Rugby 7s finals today. Fiji will play Japan. Great Britain will play South Africa. The two winners from those matches will face off later in the day with the winner getting gold and the loser the silver. The two losers from the first games will meet to determine the bronze.

Best back story...! Fiji has never won an Olympic medal of any kind in any sport. This could be their first ever. This impoverished island nation is totally crazy about Rugby 7s. If that group brings home a medal they will become national heroes for life.

Thanks for that update. Did not have a clue how finals and a third place game worked. Thanks for clarifying. I'll continue not to give a ish about a final the US isn't in, but good for them, I guess.

Ah, good old Bogus. He rarely disappoints. Watched him play against our Wildcats in 2005 during the tournament. Orbzut and Alleyne contained him that night. I screamed BOGUS! every time he touched the ball.

In Irwin Center, was there myself as well.
The weekend started great with a 62-52 win against the Utes. MichSt. game thereafter pretty much decided Coach Smith's remaining tenure at UK. It seemed we were one rebound away from the Final Four. After the Spartans won, I was physically sick for a week.

Remember when Bradley got up in Boguts face giving him a rash of not so sweet talk? Yeah E8 game was a travesty. I remember Chuck Hayes just sat on bench after final buzzer with tears rolling down his cheeks. It was a very loooong ride back to Houston with my daughter that night. We had one helluva Cat crowd there tho didn't we?!!!

Lithuania should be our biggest competition with Spain looking lackluster. France and Serbia are significantly better than China and Venezuela so we can't just show up and win by 40, but Australia solidly beat both of them. Argentina is pretty solid if we face them in the knockout round, and Spain and Brazil are others we certainly can't sleep on.

edit: Argentina and Lithuania play tonight, and whoever loses is likely our semifinal opponent. We'll probably get Brazil or Spain in the first round.
