I love Dan Hicks calling swimming. I can’t stand Terico. Never have liked him. Seems smug on a Jim Nantz level

Does anyone wonder why there is Olympic golf and tennis? Don't you think the average pro would 10-1 or maybe a 100 to 1 rather win the Masters or Wimbledon than the gold medal?

I am for the golf dudes from Finland!

Also don't understand soccer. Don't they have the World Cup every 4 years which is essentially the exact same competition?

I agree with you about the Masters and Wimbledon. But a gold medal would be awfully nice to have too.

I watched swimming, beach volleyball, and badminton last night.

I'm always amazed at how good these Olympians are at their sport.

I'll watch just about any medal round I can catch for any sport.

I actually got a little pumped for the women's relay last night as all of the top 3 teams broke the previous world record. That is the definition of bringing it!

Men’s team never makes it. Which I find shocking. Women’s team is all ages.
Why? We never do squat in the WC either.

Used to go to Jalapenos on Broadway all the time, needless to say the owner and staff were all huge soccer fans. Only during the WC, we used to argue with them which team would go home first, Mexico or US. 😄

Their fandom for the Mexican national team reminded me of what we used to be with UK football, afraid to expect any real success, and always waiting and expecting the worst to happen. I truly felt their pain!!

I have always thought that only things where the Olympics are the biggest thing in the sport should be in the Olympics. Dustin Johnson isn't saying months out that he isn't playing the Masters just because he doesn't want to.

Exactly! That is why I love track and field at the Olympics, going back to the time of the original Olympics, that has always been the biggest prize every four years. Plus it is elemental, e.g., who can run the fastest or jump the highest, no refs or arguments, whoever runs from point A to point B the fastest is the winner.

I don’t like sports with judges. Boxing may be the exception.
Agree. I don't even consider anything that relies entirely on "judging" to be a sport. When the measure is opinion it is an athletic beauty contest. Boxing has scoring based on some relatively objective criteria. Plus you can win by knocking someone out so the scoring goes out the wind then. I mean... rhythmic gymnastics? Please!

Watching the mixed 4x100 medley relay where they have 2 men and 2 women on each team and it shows exactly why people who were born one gender shouldn't be allowed to compete against the other one. Four of the teams started out with men and they left the women in their wake. By the way, it was an interesting event. Will they have a coed relay in track and field as well?

Is cheerleading really going to be a sport in the Olympics or is it being reclassified to that at the high school and college levels? I saw a documentary on it a few years ago and it was a problem as being considered an activity (not that word but something else). Girls were getting hurt during it and not being given the same insurance rights as other sports like football. I think they were fighting for the change in classification to rectify that.

BTW, cheerleading in college used to be the "sport or activity" that you were most likely to suffer a "life altering injury" than anything else. Way above football. I think they changed the rules about what you could do at games a few years ago when that girl broke her neck being thrown up in the air at a NCAA tournament game and didn't get caught correctly. I don't even think they throw the girls up in the air at the basketball games anymore.

So why is Rory McIlroy playing for Ireland again? I thought he is from Great Britain, i.e., Northern Ireland if I recall correctly. Do they get a choice which country to represent?

and now "Cheerleading"... really?!

o_O
I would rather watch cheerleading than the aforementioned sports

I believe athletes from Northern Ireland can choose between Great Britain or Ireland

Sort of like a 3 game weekend match in baseball?

Or a yearly championship game in the SEC?

Or the NCAA being annual?

Glad for the W. No big soccer fan and never will be when every critical match (see England V. Italy for Euro championship and almost every World Cup semi and final) is decided by penalty kicks

It'd be like playing a basketball game all out through two OTs, then deciding the game by lining up five guys and letting them each shoot a free throw. Utterly anti-climax tic
I disagree. PK’s are as exciting as it gets. What a gut check. I thought Press got robbed on the off sides.

When your team wins it is exciting. When your team loses in PKs it just feels arbitrary, and like you were cheated out of a worthy effort.

I made the mistake of investing a couple hours in the Euro Finals rooting for England. And then it comes down to what would be like deciding the Super Bowl by having players throw a football through a swinging tire at 20 feet. Even a field goal in football, you've had to move the ball a long way to get in position.
So how long would you let them play? 30,60,120 minutes extra? It would be a joke after a while.

I'm not saying I have a solution. I'm saying the sport is fatally flawed as a "tournament sport."

Over the course of a season I'm sure the quality rises. But it is not a game designed for clear, satisfying outcomes in a tournament setting.
You have a point but the only other option would be to keep playing until a golden goal is scored. Hell they could play for 200 minutes in that situation and possibly be injured or at best, wore out for the next game.
Perhaps a championship game could be decided this way, but I would hate for the USWNT to play 200 minutes and then have to play another game 2 days later.

Doesn't hockey remove one player from the ice during each extra period? Maybe soccer should do the same to open up the field, first extra period, you play with ten players, next extra period you play with 9, etc., until someone scores.

Penalty kicks suck, IMHO of course.

The NHL actually takes 2 players off for overtime.
