I was looking at our fall roster and trying to project what our position players might end up being. Here's a stab I took at it and I would be interested in others opinions on it as well especially those like Todd or others who keep up with baseball in detail:

C - Renfroe
1B - Porter (against righties)/ Rea (against lefties)
2B - Frazier
SS - Flair
3B - Norris
LF - Brownlee
CF - Bradford
RF - Stark/Woodruff

SS seems pretty wide open with a lot of candidates (Henderson, Britton, Casey, Jones etc.) but Flair will probably have the best bat of the group if he can hold up defensively. Anyone seen any of the fall scrimmages?

So, this is all based on what I've heard.

C- Renfroe and Mitch Slauter. Renfroe will probably either DH or play the outfield when he is not catching. His bat is too good to not be in the lineup. Slauter seems to have emerged ahead of Amiratti as the top back-up catcher.

1B- Rea I think will get the job to himself and probably will not platoon. He can defend and he has a ton of power. I'm not really sure where Porter will fit in- more than likely as a role player.

2B- Frazier

3B- Flair- he has a separated shoulder, so hopefully he will recover soon from that. He has really good potential. He is more of a corner infielder than a middle infielder though.

SS- Philip Casey seems to have the inside track. He is possibly our best defensive infielder. Can he hit and how soon will he hit, though? Demarcus has a minor leg injury, so I wouldn't totally rule him out. I wouldn't be surprised to see a platoon here unless Casey defends at Matthew Maniscalco levels.

OF- Brandon Woodruff- may DH some when Renfroe plays the outfield.

OF- Bradford- Has CF locked down.

OF- Brownlee- Long time Cohen favorite. As always, health is an issue, but we can cover for him if he is hurt- Renfroe, Stark, Henderson.

DH- Daryl Norris- he is starting to hit with some power.

P- Routt and Stratton have spots locked down. They should be pretty solid. The Sunday spot is up in the air a little bit- I think it will ultimately come down to Evan Mitchell, Daryl Norris, and Trevor Fitts. Yes, Brandon Woodruff and Jacob Lindgren will also be in the mix. Gene is saying that Ben Bracewell is a competitor for a starting spot- that's not true. He will be our closer, and we are not going to make our closer a starter, and if Bracewell is even a midweek starter, I will be shocked.

Regardless, fall baseball is as much about instruction as it is anything else. No one is going to win or lose a spot based on how they play in the fall. Heck, Brayden Jones was second on the team in home runs last year, and he redshirted. What's going to happen in Nov. is Cohen and the assistants will meet with the players, and they are going to review what each player needs to work on. And then things will heat up in Jan. They will see if how the players respond to their critique and see how much they get better in between Nov. and Jan.

Really, we won't have a set lineup until SEC play in all likelihood. Our non-conference games are as much about getting guys playing time and seeing how they do against live fire in game situations than anything- as well as winning. But there is no substitute for live game action. That walk-on that Gene loves may be tearing up some walk-on pitchers. Anyway, that's how we lose a game to someone like Sacred Heart or Belmont from time to time- and why everyone else loses to teams like that as well.

As always, good info, Todd. It just seems to get more difficult for me each year to really get into football. I was so into it for many years and I have been beat down by it too many times. Baseball has done it to me quite often in the past few years also, but I seem to bounce back looking forward to the next year more than I do with football. My dream for MSU is still a CWS title, more than anything else. I know I'm probably alone in that wish, but that's what makes the world go around. Well, maybe John Cohen has that ultimate dream too, but, you know what I'm sayin'.

Mitchell was much better last year, especially at the end. Stratton has all the tools though so maybe he puts it together this year.

Caleb and Pollorena are going to be huge for us- they can go multiple innings, but the difference this year will be that we have a legit closer in Bracewell, and then we also have Stark who can come in and close or pitch in relief as well.

We also have Girodo, who I expect to take a step forward as a middle relief/left hand match up guy, and Graveman is going to be a solid pitcher for us as well. Some of the freshman like Woodruff, Lindgren, and Cox will also help the bullpen out. Tim Statz has changed his arm angle- he is more of a sidearm guy now.

For the first time in a long while, we are going to be able to do some match-up things and also have guys that have some defined roles, as well as a legit traditional closer. By traditional I mean a guy that comes in the 8th and 9th only and shuts the game down. Caleb did a great job as our closer last year- but we had to ask him to get four-five- eight inning saves at times. We should be able to rest him more, which will hopefully make him more effective. Same with Pollorena.

Stratton was still learning how to pitch to degree last year. His problem was he would try to strike everyone out- which he could do in high school. Not many guys can do that in the SEC. What happens when you do that and you're not David Price, you end up running your pitch count up because you are trying to throw a swing and miss pitch every time. Sometimes you end up getting behind the count to the hitter- which is not good, and sometimes you challenge a hitter and they hit it hard.

Look at what he did to Ole Miss last year- he had several strikeouts in two innings, but he gave up a ton of runs and we were done by the end of the first inning and lost. That's a perfect example of what I am talking about with him.

So, he has to learn how to pitch to contact- and I think he did just that in the Cape Cod League. He won some big games for the Harwich Mariners, who won the Cape Cod League Championship.

Also- going back to the bullpen for a second- we were asking him and Routt to not only start, but go 7-8 innings every time because of our bullpen situation. That's a lot to ask any pitcher. With our bullpen being a lot deeper, we only need him to go five or so. Stratton knows that, and what that's going to do is take pressure off of him and the other starters, and it's going to allow him to be a little more aggressive and not have to worry about going 8 innings every time out. That's big psychologically for a pitcher.

As far as Evan Mitchell- he has good stuff. But I want to see him pitch with more confidence and get stronger- and yes, a lot of that was because he was just a freshman. He also needs to add a third pitch- much like Stratton. Us going to the postseason was very beneficial to him and us because he won a big game against Austin Peay, and he got the start in the Super Regional game one- even though he got knocked around. But, his inexperience really hurt us in the SEC Tournament and Super Regional, because he was literally scared to make a mistake IMO from watching on a TV- and when that happens, a pitcher's control suffers because he is worried about making a mistake, and starts to be too fine, he gets behind in the count and has to come back with a strike, the hitter knows that too and hammers it. Evan will be good as long as he stays healthy, but it was a tough situation for him at times, and I didn't envy him. But I do wonder if he may not be better for us out of the bullpen in the long run depending on how these freshman do. He will be a candidate for our rotation from here on out, though.

I, like another poster, am a little surprised that Stratton would have a spot locked down so early after struggling so mightily last year. Especially since apparently Mitchell does not. Also, with Porter, I was hearing good things about him and since he was a JUCO AA I was thinking he might actually end up getting more time than Rea since he would be another LH bat with some pop but glad to hear that Rea is impressing. We definitely need to nail down a good defensive left side of the infield and it will be interesting to see what emerges there. Is Flair really a better 3rd baseman than Norris? I guess either way the other would likely DH a lot anyway. Looks like most everything else what I was thinking lines up with your projections. Talent level has definitely been increased even though we did lose a lot of experience from last year in the field.

other than maybe CT in CF. A lot of people don't know about Rea and what he can do simply because he has been hurt.

Stratton is one of our most experienced pitchers- he will almost certainly be a starting pitcher to start the year. But, if he struggles again, Cohen won't hesitate to move him again, either. He was dominant at times in the Cape Cod League.

Defensively, yes, Flair is better than Norris. If Flair struggles at the plate, then Norris could start there- Brayden Jones might also get a shot, and even Porter.

Talent wise, we have made a lot of great strides- we have increased the number of players on our roster that have been drafted, and the ones that weren't are often times guys like Adam Frazier that are solid players. But our inexperience will hurt us at times next year- I wouldn't be surprised if we are in the bottom half of the SEC on offense, but we should be in the top half pitching wise. I'd say that we are a middle of the pack SEC team right now talent wise- and that's a huge improvement from where we were when Cohen took over. We'll win some games that we shouldn't because we will be aggressive and we will outhustle some teams from time to time though.

What I'm looking forward to is 2013 when we have experience in all phases of the game.
