my bell broke Saturday. The bell part broke off. Luckily no one was knocked out.

The guy beside me said to get a heavy fishing weight and put that in there. Anyone tried that? I don't want to get a new one. I got this bell for x-mas when I was 12 so I'd like to keep using it.

And in case you're wondering...it took 23 years for the bell to break.

My bell is about 25 years old and the same exact thing happened to mine on Saturday. I, however, found the clapper after it broke.

I cut a piece of a really heavy duty clothes hanger and bent it on both ends with a pair of pliers.

Bell is back working again! You can probably use a fishing weight or a big nut off a bolt if you lost the clapper itself.

and I were at Memorial Stadium (LSU?) and a guy beside us was ringing away on his cowbell when the clapper came off. It zinged about 6 rows down and hit a guy in the back of the head. Just about knocked him out.

Occupational hazard in Cow Bell Land.

I like the coathanger and heavy bolt repair. I guessI need to check mine, with it being 42 years old and all.

OT: Am I a bad fan for not replacing my cowbell (had it for years) after it was confiscated in Gainesville in 2001?

go together, or not at all! that being said, it could easily take a decade or more to get over the loss. Get one when the time feels right.

I wound upreplacing the broken clapper with my bottle opener, attaching it to the coat hanger that was installed 10 or so years ago. Had it back in action about half way through the 3rd QTR.

Actually I guess it worked, but after about half of a game my wife pointed out to me that tiny slivers of lead were going all over the people in front of and behind me. Turns out those clackers are steel or something, and the lead fishing weights are just too soft.

I had a 22-year bell break during the 2007 Ole Miss game. Decided to retire it to my office bookshelf and buy a new one. I think an honorable retirement is a good thing for a bell. And I don't know how to weld.

It all sailed into the stands below (don't know how it got loose.) Didn't see any commotion so I don't know where the damn thing went. As Batman would say "Remember public safety."

The clanger broke in 2003. Hit a girl in the head, but fortunately she had a hell of a perm so she barely noticed she got hit by a lead weight. I threw the bell out because it had only brought us bad luck. Little did I know what my new (and current) bell would have to endure.

Those ******** took mine in Gainsville too.I only got to ring it once. I am very ashamed that I let it go without a fight.

I've had a couple to break over the years. I take a short, thick (maybe 3/8") bolt and put a nut on the end with loctite. After a few hundred rings, the part of bolt stickingout past the nut becomes so deformed it will never come off.

The only problem with retiring a bell and getting a new one is that the new ones don't sound near as good.

I bought my 10 year old son a new bell last week and my 25 year old bell just has a better and louder sound to it.

Use loctite. No more problems.

Mine sheared off at Austin in 1992, much to the joy of the Texas fans sitting around me. I was ringing responsibly....its not my fault State scored twice in the first 5 minutes of the game.
