Reports this week told us that Bumphis was 1 of only 4 players in the last 20 years to start his first collegiate game. Of note, Bumphis is the only offensive player in the last 20 years to start his first collegiate game.

Not a shocker really, considering all the juggernaut offenses we have trotted on to the field in the last 2 decades. /sarcasm

It is just amazing how conservative our coaches have been.

A couple of the stories up on BDJ have me hopeful that the young talent on the field will help us with recruiting. There is no doubt the difference the new offense has already made on recruiting. Carlos Thompson is impressed that Boyd and Cox are already contributing. Wells commented on the early play of Bumphis. You know V. Sanders took notice. It is refreshing to have a staff that will put young talent on the field and not make excuses about it.

If we can put up more points this year, and be a little creative on offense, these kids will hopefully draw to that. But I think the biggest offensive player we need to get right now is Damien Robinson. We need this guy. I think if we can get the big offensive lineman to commit, some of these other kids might follow suit. I think the big thing holding this team back and the others in the past is the lack of performance by the O line. If Mullen can bring in the offensive line talent to give the future QB's some protection and some time to throw the ball around, these skill players may start to flock here pretty quickly.

If I only have to come compete against sophs and other freshman, there is a good chance to start

You really think Robinson may go to MSU?

then guys like Damien will start to give us a harder look. Ole Miss is the sexy team right now. Nationally ranked, coming off of a bowl victory, lots of preseason hype. If State can elevate itself to the point that people dont just count us out of games, and we can show that we can play respectable games against Alabama, LSU, Ga Tech, Florida, and Ole Miss, guys may want to be a part of our rebuilding process. If Ole Miss could underachieve, that would help out too. But Mullen is going all out right now. He talking everywhere, hes putting a huge emphasis on recruiting, and he trying to get the most out of what we have. I think we have an ok chance of getting Robinson. Im not gonna hold my breath, but at least we are in the conversation.

You may not understand the situation with Robinson's head coach.

We are in the conversation too, but it's just window dressing. He isn't coming to OM or MSU unless one of us hires his coach.

In the SEC, thats where the big lineman usually go. I don't think we will get him, but if we were to happen to get him, it would be huge. I still think hes the most valuable offensive prospect in the state. But in order for State to begin to get better, its offensive lineman of his caliber that we need to bring in here. </p>

And Robinson's brother played for us (not that that's necessarily worked out so well for us in the past - Larry and Jason Campbell being just one example). Also, we'll see how much, if any, good the school board's new rule will do.

James Hurst verballed to North Carolina, which leaves 2, stone and robinson. Samsel knows that bama wants either Robinson or Stone. Ergo, state and mississippi can hang it up on robinson.
